I usually write with my fountain pen caps posted. For most of my pens that works great. However when I upgraded to a larger and fancier pen, I wanted to avoid posting as it would back-weight the pen too much and posting the lid could possibly scratch the urushi finish. However, that left me wanting to have somewhere to store the cap as I wrote, as well as keep the pen from rolling away if I put it down.I searched around for all sorts of fancy and/or vintage trays, and couldn't find anything that called to me: wood, leather, bakelite, silver, brass, glass, etc. I needed something functional, but that didn't necessarily need to make a statement (after all, most of the time I'm just journaling at my kitchen table). I finally settled on this tray-- from the size measurements it looked just right; large enough to fit the oversized pen case for my 'fancy' pen when storing it on the shelf but wouldn't be too obtrusive during a writing session at the table.Overall, I'm pleased. Just the size I needed; holds the pen cap as I'm writing as I wanted, and comfortably holds up to two pens during a writing session. The walnut has a nice tactile feel with smooth/sanded edges, and the velvet on the inside and on the bottom keeps everything safe and scratch-free.It's not perfect; the velvet lining on the inside had some bubbles underneath where it was unevenly glued, but it's more something you can feel rather than see. And it's hard to tell if the wood has any coating or finish on it-- it doesn't seem like it does-- but I added a little 'board butter' (mineral oil / beeswax mix that I use on my cutting boards) to the sides and edges to give it some added protection against the ink spatters. In all, a good value for the price.

I wanted something that I could throw everyday pencil-sized tools into and keep at the ready. This not only fit the bill, but it exceeded in quality. Felt not only on the floor, but also on the underside of the tray.

I purchased this to hold pens on my desktop. It looks good and right now I have 5 of my favorite fountain pens in it! I didn't think it would hold more than 4.Very satisfied with my purchase.

Probably Works for Pens but makes for a Great Travel Dice Tray. Great size to hold dice on oen side and roll into the other. Hight enough ways to keep in dice, the velvet softens the roll and its a large enough size to hopefully not miss the tray and have the dice roll onto the floor.

Well constructed. The felt in the bottom of tray does not cover the entire surface, but it is hardly noticeable. Holds 2-4 medium size fountain pens (think Lamy 2000, Platinum 3776). Good value.

Ticonderoga pencils will not fit until they are about 1/2 shorter. I wanted the box to be 1" longer.
