Dietz #76 Original Oil Burning Lantern (Black)

Works right always and has a classic lantern look. Runs 18 hours on 188 grams of lamp oil.

It's a good quality lantern. I waited to write a review because sometimes these metal oil lamps develop leaks at the seams. This one hasn't. Exactly as advertised.

We just installed a brick paver patio and wanted to add a little decor and night lighting to the bar height tables out there. Since this is an 1890 farmstead, I was looking for period styling. So many of the lanterns out there that look like this are only for decoration. On a property like this, if it's not useful, we don't buy it. I ordered two, and I can't say they are the sturdiest thing I've ever seen. It's disappointing that they are now made in China, and are quite cheap compared to the originals. One of the lanterns functions basically as it should, the other gets stuck on the way down (when lighting or extinguishing the flame). With a little help, it drops into place. I'm sure it's something my husband can straighten out, so I didn't bother sending that one back. I've seen other reviews that complained of the same problem. But if you're looking for a cute lantern, that can be used for lighting indoors or out, this is a decent choice.

This is my go-to lantern when the power goes out, when I'm sitting outside at night relaxing with some Scotch and a cigar, or when I'm up late (literally burning the midnight oil) working on my computer. The Dietz 76 puts out a nice, steady, warm light. The light is ample enough for a small room, or to illuminate your desk / table enough to work. I realize that many people consider these emergency light, however, I challenge you to use this to read by, write your novel by, or type away at your computer by. Even try eating dinner by lantern light. It's warm, comforting and calming. It really gives a pleasant experience. It's also so much more inviting than fluorescent lighting.As a side note, I simply use paraffin oil in this lantern (specifically, I use Lamplight 60009 Clear Ultra-pure Lamp Oil). It creates a steady, orange-yellow flame without odor or soot. Another side note, this lantern (like ALL lanterns) gets HOT. You cannot touch the glass or the top of it unless you want burned fingers. The base and sides stay cool. So, on cold Winter nights, not only does this give pleasing light, but also pleasing warmth! Remember to keep the handle DOWN when burning! If you keep it up it will collect heat and you might burn your hand when you pick it up!Give lantern light a try! You won't be disappointed!

Even though the articles about this company, say it was started in New York the products are made in China. The fit is not as good as a $15 Chinese lantern I bought. It does appear to be a little better made the glasses obviously better but not worth a difference in price The base when made there is a off centered opening around the fill valve that opens into the air chamber above the tank. I have not seen one of these open like this except another complaint by another reviewer. Reviews complain a lot about them leaking but I never filled this one with oil to see if it leaked, just returned. I would like to get one of the $60 German lanterns but I just don’t think it’s worth it.

Power is spotty on the prairie. The Lanterns are a great backup for lighting.

To start with the insert filler tube that the cap threads into was damaged, it was supposed to be pressed into the body of the lamp and apparently was partially pulled out and dislodged so that leaks. The cap itself has dented threads on it and would leak profusely if you tip the lamp at all even after adding a new o-ring it still leaks. It's an extreme fire hazard if you're not literally standing there watching it the whole time you're using it and it will still leak fuel all over whatever you set it on or drip all over your floor if you hang it. Even if you only fill it up 75% and then just carry it around with you for light the oil splashing around inside still leaks out everywhere. Apparently these used to be a good lamp but they've turned into complete garbage now, I absolutely recommend finding a different brand these are not worth the money not even with the huge sale price they had you're better off to go to Walmart and spend $8 on a lamp that looks just like it. I would return it for a new one except for the fact I think I'd get the same quality garbage a second time around and it's not worth my time to mess with it I don't think they're customer service would be that good... I could be wrong but I just don't have a lot of faith in it.

I prefer oil lights while camping. This has been a good option for us. Sturdy reliable construction.
