Is this attracted to the stud itself, or a nail in the stud? How is this different from using a small magnet to find the nails (my current method)?

The Studbuddy attaches to the fasteners in the wall. The differences I can see is that since this stud finder's base is plastic you run no risk of scratching the paint, also, the Studbuddy is about 6 inches long and you may find a screw or nail more easily than with a smaller magnet.

Does the Stud Buddy have stronger magnets than the Stanley 47-400 stud finder?

Hello and thank you for your question. The StudBuddy® uses a much stronger magnet (N52 neodymium) than the Stanley 47-400, which allows The StudBuddy® to hang on the wall "handsfree" to provide continual visual reference for the user. The StudBuddy Team

What is the gauss magnetic force for this? is it over of less than 3000 Guass?

Hello, I hope this answers your question. Surface Field: 6157 Gauss (each magnet) Pull Force: 16.63 lbs (each magnet) The StudBuddy Team

What us the best way to store this? I feel like when i put it in my toolbox it will stick to everything metal

Yes, it will stick to something metal. I just put it in a side pocket in the tool bag.
