Simple, sturdy, and effective.
This simple tool has saved me hours of work and potentially years of back pain since I bought it earlier this year. Works on pretty much any ground rod or stake up to an inch in diameter. The only rod I couldn't pull out with this thing was set in a pond where I couldn't get a good angle for leverage. It's by far the best ground stake puller I have used. It's simple and can take a ton of abuse. Not to mention it's pretty lightweight. I just left mine on a job site and lost it recently, so I'm ordering a new one. Well worth the money in my opinion.

Got for Burning Man...so far works great!
Just like a couple other reviewers, I got this to use at Burning Man. I'm pulling 3/4 inch concrete stakes with it. I haven't actually used it at the playa yet, but I have tested it at home in regular dirt (which is really a tougher job), and this worked great to remove the stakes. It would be nice if the notch that the stake fits in was a bit smaller, but I noticed that it I place the base of the puller at an angle it works best. The handle-pipe of the puller is hollow, so you can insert a longer pipe inside it for even more mechanical advantage. I certainly haven't found this to be necessary, but I think it's cool that the option is available. edit: 10/20/2010 I used this at Burning Man this year and it was wonderful! It pulled out 2 and 3 foot long stakes like they weren't even in the ground. I didn't need to insert a longer pipe or anything. edit: 3/24/2012 I used this again at Burning Man in 2011 and, again, it was amazing! This thing is not rusting or otherwise showing age.

Best Tool EVER!
Simply the best tool for pulling up rebar, troublesome tent stakes, fence posts, etc. Amazing for removing items from hard pack desert and even frozen ground. I became camp hero at Burning Man this past year because pulling up rebar in the heat after a week of camping can prove to be extremely difficult without proper tools!

Great ideal it needs another leg so you can set ...
Great ideal it needs another leg so you can set it on a form and it needs some kind of teeth where when you put it on the stake you can. Go down but when you go up it grabs the stake in stead of just wedging it in the slot

Harder to drive in, easier to pull out
Like most of the other reviewers, I took this to Burning Man (my 7th). I didn't try to pull T-Stakes, but I did try to pull out rebar. This tool worked the best on our thickest, longest rebar. Primarily, we pulled 2.5 foot 1/2" rebar stakes, and really it was so easy and fast. It usually took less than a minute to pull out a stake. Generally, I work on bringing down the tents because I don't have the physical strength to efficiently pull the rebar up - with this tool I could easily help out. Give me a lever and a place to stand... However, the stake puller wasn't 100% awesome - it failed to pull a few types of stakes. We had some stakes not made out of rebar, with a smooth surface. These were easier to pound into the ground, but the stake-puller had difficulty getting a grip on them. We also had rebar for individual tents (probably 1 foot of 1/4" rebar). The candy-caned rebar could be pulled out (since there was something to grip), but it was useless on anything straight that was that thin. If you've got large shade structures with big rebar, I highly recommend this tool. It's expensive enough that I probably wouldn't buy it just for going to Burning Man once, but the tool seems very sturdy and I expect to be able to use it for years to come.

Very poor product - DO NOT BUY
We purchased this stake puller to remove stakes from concrete forms on a large construction project. This is by far the worst tool that we have purchased for this entire project over the past two years. At first glance it seem nice. The foot height is a bit tall for absolute convenience, however the overall design of the tool was usable at first. Then we started pulling stakes. The first half dozen or so seemed wonderful. You walk up to the stake, position the tool, and push. Stake comes out. Then things became more difficult. The tool began to slip on the stake. Upon examination it was found that the sharp edge on the tool which is necessary to grip the stake was becoming worn. The company has neglected to harden the head. After about 10 stakes, the edge is rounded so that you have to put your foot on it in order in order to get any traction. By the time we had pulled 30 or 40 stakes the thing was absolutely worthless. We tried buying a new head but it had the exact same problem. After 20 or 30 stakes it was worthless too. We are very unhappy with this product. Hardening metal is a very old art, and for Tolman to sell a stake puller that relies on sharp point and then not harden it, is quite unethical because it makes the tool useless after very little use. We will not be buying it again.

wood stake puller
i purchased the stake puller primarily for wood stakes. the concept of the puller is OK but the performance is useless for anything you cant pull out by hitting side to side and pulling out by hand. the jaws for the stakes are to short and the peg just slips off when you apply pressure. if the jaws were at lease an 1.5" long the tool would probably work better. it doesn't seam like there was much product testing when it was designed.bottom line if your pulling wood pegs 2' or more in the ground don't waste your money unless you plan on modifying the puller.

A Burning Man godsend
Fantastic product. Purchased for a Burning Man camp. After years wrestling out rebar using Vise-Grips, and utterly exhausting ourselves in the process, we finally got a stake-puller. It takes a few stakes to figure out the technique but it is very simple to use. Adaptable to most all of the rebar and stakes we had in camp, so long as they are of decent length. Won't really work on smaller stakes, like those common Coleman oversize-nail-with-a-plastic-hook-type-of-stakes, because there's not enough stake to grab on to. FWIW the tool is little bulky and heavy due to its heavy-duty construction. I can't fathom how one could break it under normal use. Highly recommended.
