After reading the narrative section and studying the meal plans, I decided I had to get a copy of my own. The book is beautifully constructed and well written. It has vibrant pictures that really showcase the food. The book is divided into 3 main sections. The first part educates you about food. An easy read. It does not go into huge detail here. Some sections I found I wanted to learn more about. There's the Internet for that😊. It gives you enough pique interest and get started eating healthy. The second section is your meal plan made from recipes in the book of course. It suggests two options to start; a 3 day detox and a 7 day detox. Then it gives 2 more weeks of meals designed to ease you into a healthy eating habit after that cleanse that slowly introduces you to various foods that are known to give many people negative reactions such as eggs and soy. The menu is designed so that you do most of your food prep in the first 3 days of the week and the other days meals are repeats. Great for busy parents like myself. And I was able to adapt the menu to fit the needs of my husband and kids. Clean eating is a diet based on real food. Little to no processed foods. The recipes are super simple and most contain very few ingredients. Some of the ingredients can be difficult to find. Some are a bit costly. Being the middle of winter and recipes that are focused on fresh ingredients and are heavy in fruits and vegetables, I am finding that in spending quite a bit on those items. However; it is a diet low in meat. So there's cost savings there. The recipes are FANTASTIC! I am loving eating this way. I enjoy trying new recipes and new foods so it's a perfect fit. The dishes are flavorful and filling. There are some that I thought I wouldn't like because the flavor combos are different than I've seen before. It turns out I love those dishes! I feel better than I have in a long time! No more bloating, I have energy, I'm sleeping better, even my adult acne is noticeably better! I highly recommend this guide book to kick start healthier eating habits and a better you! Review: The BEST Cookbook from the Editors of MSL by Far. - The food photography in this book is absolutely superb. To the untrained eye, it looks just like previous books from the editors of MSL, but this one is much different, trust me. If you've ever dabbled with Food Gawker, you'll notice that they tend to really love over exposed photos, natural light, nothing "moody" or dark, no shadows, etc. It was a style very similar to all of the previous cookbooks by the editors of MSL, but this time, the book is printed on matte paper, giving an extra rustic mood to this cookbook. The photographs are absolutely beautiful. Not one is a "meh" & the food styling is on point. I expect nothing less from MSL. On the recipes & guidance: wow. So much inspiration can be drawn from any of these recipes, especially all of the poached fish & baked recipes in parchment paper ones. There aren't any recipes with red meat, making this book ideal for vegetarians & pescetarians alike! There are a few recipes using chicken though, so never fear! I'm a huge loyal fan of cookbooks from MSL, they're simply some of the most phenomenal cookbooks out there. They list nutritional content & provide very helpful & interesting facts about the ingredients you're using. You don't need to spend a fortune at a juice bar to detox. Buy this book, make a list of groceries you need, & create a simple meal plan for yourself to follow. Too much time wasted & thinking involved? Well sweetheart, this is your health, so you better make damn sure that you take it seriously. If Americans took extra time to think about what they should make for dinner instead of what they should buy for dinner, our obesity pandemic probably wouldn't be so bad. Highly recommend this book to any & all who are interested in clean eating. A lot of these recipes may ask for the usage of honey. If you're vegan, you can always just substitute it with stevia or agave syrup or maple syrup. Any & all proteins can be substituted for more vegetables or a plant based one. I'm obsessed with this cookbook & I think it's worth every penny.

Pretty good book, with some tweaks
I am in the middle of the 21 day action plan in this book, and I have really enjoyed all the recipes, schedules, and foundational knowledge presented in this book. I've been meaning to do a clean eating challenge for months now, and this book's action plan and appealing recipes make it easy to jump in. My husband begrudgingly agreed to join, and he hasn't complained nearly as much as I thought he would, and has even commented on how good some of the meals have been. I haven't really lost weight, but I'm a nursing mom and for some reason it is impossible for me to drop any pounds while nursing. My husband is doing it with me, so he if sees any significant weight loss at the end of this I'll update this review with his numbers. I only have two criticisms: the first and biggest is that some of the recipes are rather bland, but easy to tweak if you're a decent to proficient cook.....and without sacrificing the healthy aspect of the meal. For example, the cauliflower soup is flavorless if you follow the book's instructions. Instead, I roasted my cauliflower for lots of flavor, and roasted some garlic cloves with it as well, and then puréed that with stock in the proportions listed in the book. SO much tastier, without any ingredient tweaks (well, half a tablespoon of olive oil). If you're not the type of person who can improvise recipes and you don't really know your way around a kitchen, you will probably find some of these recipes underwhelming. My second criticism is that some of the serving sizes seem crazy small. I have easy access to local, organic, big produce and was kind of taken aback by how small some portions were, like the Brussels sprouts salad. I adjusted the portions accordingly, but kind of annoying if you're tracking calories and relying on the book's calorie info to reflect what you'll actually ingest. Overall, I like this book and have no regrets about buying it! It's great to have an arsenal of healthy, creative recipes for this action plan and beyond!

A Book of recipes that even your friends would enjoy!
I really like this book. It provides icons with the recipes letting you know if they are Vegan, Dairy-Free, Nut-Free or Gluten Free. I really liked the Restock Your Pantry section of the book, because it gives you a "substitution" list. Replace This- (White Potatoes) With This- (Sweet Potatoes), even though this is an actual on the list, they also tell you that this doesn't mean that white potatoes are bad for you (because they do appear in recipes in the book), it's just that, whenever possible, make the healthier option your default choice. The pictures are nice to look at, I'm all about presentation, when I think about preparing some of these recipes, I also think about how they will show well if I'm preparing them for friends. I would really love for my family and friends to enjoy a meal with me that's not only healthy but nicely presented. I get a very good feeling when I look at the pictures in this book. I can't wait to try the Red Lentil Soup with Turnips and Parsley. It looks wonderful to me, as do the lentil burgers. The recipes in this book look classy to me, and not at all boring. Also, each recipe has a per serving, calorie, fat, cholesterol, protein, carb, and fiber calculation, something else that I find appealing. Also information about detoxing is also talked about. So overall, I didn't find this book disappointing, I really, really like it. I would recommend it to anyone who's trying to eat clean, and invite their friends and family to join them without being pushy. Some of the soups look homemade hearty, but healthy, and I think that they would make an enjoyable meal. Be creative, set an informal table, kick back and enjoy--all without the guilt. I would recommend this book and I rate it 5 stars.

LOVE IT
I got this book after watching my friend do the meal plan for about two weeks, and I am so happy I did. This book makes it really easy to develop a plan to start eating better foods with really easy recipes and a simple meal plan. The book provides 3 weeks of meal plans that have lots of repeating recipes, so you can make batches of food to eat during the week (I'm only cooking for one, so one recipe often feeds me for three or four meals). You don't need any special cooking knowledge to make the meals, so even if you aren't a great cook, you'll do fine. And the meal plans don't use all the meals in the book, so if you don't like something, you can easily find another option to replace it. I didn't care for any of the smoothies they told me to drink the first week, so I picked different ones! Making shopping lists is easy, and eating better gets a lot more accessible. I do recommend learning you spices! Some of the meals can come out a little bland, especially if you've never worked with the foods before (like lentils, wtf are those?!), so knowing what spices to add is a huge help!! I highly recommend!!

So-so
If you are really looking for a plan to reset your health, etc., this is not it. The detox plans are ridiculous -- not enough protein to keep your muscles from melting. But there are some very nice recipes in the book, different, with good flavors, low fat and interesting techniques. My real complaint is the number of high carb recipes included in these books. As a pre-diabetic, I'm trying to limit my carb intake to lose weight, but all these health cookbooks are pushing grains, grains, grains. So -- a mixed review.

An Action Plan for Whole Living starting with a Clean Slate
If you were a fan of Whole Living Magazine from Martha Stewart's publications then this should make you happy. It definitely did for me when the unique magazine ended. Clean Slate is adventuresome but not extreme. It puts a new spin on everyday foods like beans, grains, root vegetables for example. We started with the detox that eased us into the food plan. There are lots of color photos that show how attractive presentation whets the appetite. There are soups, snacks, and detox drinks in addition to main dishes. The book is well organized. It could be a starting point for someone who wants to move towards more plant based cuisine. It could be a way to distance from the fast food/junk food rut. Following the suggested plan, without substitutions (like bacon grease for olive oil), will give results. Well before a month you will feel tha change working. Things that come with a new way of eating are more energy, less, to no, digestive distress, and an overall feeling of well being. Weight loss is inevitable if you choose to follow the basic daily menus until it begins a new habit. .

Not sure if many people can make the jump from a typical American diet to this - but I wholeheartedly recommend it if you can
I waited until I had made at least 20 recipes before posting this review. I thought I was a healthy eater, but this really gives you the tools to actually eat an amazingly healthy and tasty diet. Not sure if many people can make the jump from a typical American diet to this - but I wholeheartedly recommend it if you can. The cleansing routine requires a juicer and maybe something like a nutribullet (I have a great blender but it just didn't do the trick with the Green Machine Smoothie. You could skip those recipes if you need to and still get great benefit from the majority of the recipes. This morning I ate the Frittata with Spring Vegetables and was very pleasantly surprised. That is a brunch worthy recipe. This is how I would imagine a person with a personal chef would eat all the time. As a side note, I am a family nurse practitioner, and wish all my patients would buy (and use) this book. The vegetables are pricy, but getting fat sick and diabetic is much more costly.

Loved the whole book

Sensible and easy to source ingredients!
Some sensible recipes in here (for a change) as many clean living/juice books contain some unachievable recipes.
