Set in South Pakistan, this controversial novel is a searing study of evil. It is the tragic and shocking story of the beautiful Heer, brutalized and corrupted by Pir Sain, the so-called man of God whom she is married to at the age of fifteen. Heart breakingly cruel and absolutely beautiful
"Some books you read. Some books you enjoy. But some books just swallow you up, heart and soul." -Joanne Harris. I've noticed the one-star ratings for this book, and truth be told, I don't blame you guys. It's Tehmina Durrani's amazing writing that has brought out the hate in her readers towards her book. It's not a book you can love but one you can only hate. It's a depiction of hell and its only fair that her readers hate what this book tries to expose: the sins that take place under the garb of a "Shrine", the men who prey on women behind the veil, the society which uses religion to oppress, suppress and drive women to madness, forcing them to live a life where they die each and everyday. If we need any more proof of how destructive religion and 'fear of God' can be, here it is. A book that represents religion exactly for what it is: a tool used by the powerful to prey upon ignorant minds. Each and every sentence is impregnated with horror and every word will pierce your soul. However, I should warn any prospective readers that it is not a book for the faint hearted. Pick it up only if you want to read something worth reading in your life.

This book made me feel disgust, hatred, sadness, contempt and anger all at the same time... it was too much for me to handle.

Heartbreaking but worth reading
It is the story of Heer who at very tender age gets married to Pir Sain, a highly influencial person. Holding a high religious status, Pir sain is respected in the society but for Heer getting married to him brings all the agonising, horrifying and unpleasant episodes and her life becomes a living hell. This religious person is not a saint or a holy person but is devil himself who forced his wife in prostitution, murdered his son, tried to molest his daughter and in the name of religion exploited many people but none resented because of his powerful social and religious status. How Heer find redemption and challenge his influence is the apogee of the story.

A disturbing read
It starts of well, but as it progresses it becomes repetitive and too cruel. I just got tired midway and lost interest. The end however came as a surprise. Some books leave you exhausted and depressed, this is one such book. Maybe someone who has never encountered such unspeakable amount of cruelty can not imagine or find these things very disturbing. I don't like the tone of hopelessness, I have read Alice Walker's Colour Purple and Katherine Stockett's The Help.. But the cruelty in this book is heartbreaking and disturbing.

Good Book
This is a great book, though by reading the name I was thinking that the book is about the blasphemy law and harassment of minorities in Pakistan but the plot is different and indeed a very important and interesting one.

What a book
Enjoyed reading it could not put it down. Such an eye opener in many regards about things that take place behind closed doors and on the surface everything looks religiously just.
