Classic book on cabin building, a must-have if serious about building
Excellent in every way. Simple enough for beginning builders, enough tips & tricks for experienced builders like myself. Not the ONLY book you'll need, but definitely one you need to have in your library!

Great book: concepts, history and cabin lessons
This book is from another time. And as you read you will be transformed to that time. Then you realize that the world he speaks of is attainable. So you get energized and excited to try and accomplish a cabin of your own.Pros: this book has the cabin essence that is missing in today's life. read it and you'll slow way down. you might even begin to realize how far you've been removed from truly enjoying life. this book has floor plans, sketches and cabin ideas. it also has cabin related tasks: cooking, building furniture, building a fireplace, etc.Cons: for some this book might feel like fiction. the prices of materials are very low. Ideas in the book may not match building codes of today. All in all this book is charming, refreshing and great to have around. It is like having a real piece of cabin history, with a guidance on how to live even now. It is set in a time we don't visit anymore...things were slower, God was mentioned in casual conversation and prices were less. It is less about structure and more about the cabin spirit. This man is a real man...he can make a fire, cook a meal and return to the dining table clean and in great spirits.

Great Gift
I purchased this as a gift to two architect/contractor friends. They said the book was beautiful with great ideas. I read that it’s not a how-to manual which was not important to the recipients as they are already experts. The inspiration was more important.

Any day now....
When the going gets tough in day-to-day living, Your Cabin in the Woods is my favorite escape literature. In very general terms, Conrad Meinecke can show you how to build your own cabin in the woods, but maybe the most important thing about the book is its buoyant optimism and can-do spirit. A saw, a hammer, a few nails and some canvas and you'll be well on your way independent living in a natural setting. The book's frequent illustrations are filled with smiling guys with pipes in long-sleeved plaid shirts and ties. The shirtsleeves are rolled and the guy is building a fire in his newly constructed fireplace while an Irish Setter romps in the background and the wife and kids prepare food. This book has it all!The breezy effortlessness and style with which Meinecke accomplishes all of this in words and pictures makes H.D. Thoreau look like a preachy, solitary drudge. If you sometimes think of chucking it all and moving back to nature, this is the book for you. I've had this book for years and I keep it handy at all times. Heck, who knows? I might even build a cabin some day.

I Enjoy this Book
I really enjoyed this book and have found myself going back to it numerous times in the past couple months. It is a reprint of an older edition with the style and verbiage reflected. The chapters go over numerous items of building a cabin in a classic vintage way. It briefly covers items from design, construction to even cooking in a old style cabin. As some reviewers have pointed out, it does not provide you with the in-depth design and construction. It is not a technical manual. The book is well worth the read and may foster some ideas if you are building a cabin.

A design for living
I picked up an original copy of Your Cabin In The Woods many years ago and read it thoroughly over the course of about six months. In the following years of marriage (and divorce)(twice)raising a family and moving accross the country I lost track of this book and have no idea where it went. After surviving a serious illness I moved back to the Maine woods where I decided I would make the most of my time on the planet. After a futile search for the lost copy I found the book on Amazon and ordered one for myself. After reading it again I decided it would be an appropriate gift for my two grown daughters as a guide to survival in a world gone mad. "Meinecke offers practical, affordable and sane advice on how to make our own little heaven, our own Cabin in The Woods. Everyone I have shown my copy has ordered one , or more, for themselves or their loved ones. I may have to buy more as gifts for my friends who share my spiritual journey.

A substantial book on multiple levels...
Usually when I purchase a hard cover, I expect a certain "coat pocket" size. This book is big! It's designed to look comfortably "worn-in" as if it's been read and shared for a few decades--a feature appropriate to the content. For people in urban areas who dream of a little getaway somewhere, this book will be very helpful. It's unlikely I'll build my own cabin and all of the furniture in it by myself. But if I am fortunate enough to care for a cabin for a period of time, it will not compete against nature. It will honor the space it is in and the living things surrounding it.

Great book
Even if you just came back from the woods this book would make you want to return very soon. It is a great look at not only how to build a cabin but how to enjoy it. It gives simple instructions on how to build stable buildings and how to really enjoy your time while doing it. It is a good philosophy to live by as well. It talked about why the early settlers of the west enjoyed their time so much and risked so much to obtain it. I read the whole book in two sittings and loved it. I often had to put it down because the thoughts it puts into your mind make you lose track very easily of the book, which I think every book should do.It was a great book and I recomend it to anyone who has any kind of slight inclination to be in the out of doors, even if just for a picnic. And I recommend it even more to those who want to build a cabin in the woods.

INCREIBLE!!
