Mel Bartholomew's top-selling Square Foot Gardening books have made his revolutionary garden system available to millions of people. In Square Foot Gardening with Kids , Mel reveals his tips, tricks, and fun projects in one of his most cherished pursuits: teaching youngsters to build and grow a SFG of their own. The easy geometry of the gridded box breaks the complex world of gardening into digestible bites for enthusiastic young learners, and the sequence of tasks required to grow plants from seeds is repeatable and reassuring. Kids learn many valuable life lessons when tending their own garden -- such as the importance of following instructions and doing your chores, basic skills like counting and water conservation, and learning to appreciate the nature of food and why it is important to respect it. Most importantly though, they learn that growing your own food is both fun and rewarding. Review: This book is amazing and I can't wait to do everything in it - This book is amazing and I can't wait to do everything in it. My gardening attempts have always failed in the past. We homeschool our 3 kiddos and this book breaks everything down into easy to follow steps and includes activities for science, art, math, history, and language arts. This would be so fun to use in a group, school, church, club, etc... I originally checked it out from our local library and I liked it so much I had to purchase a copy for our home. Review: Great book for adults and children! - I used this to guide me to mix the soil and plant my new raised beds. The activities are wonderful for my grandson who's loving gardening as much as I am! And they are for various age groups so it isn't a one and done kind of book! My daughter is going to use it for homeschooling.

Great Kid-Friendly Version of a Great Gardening Guide!
The wife and I are big enthusiasts of being outdoors and we want to instill that as well as our interest in gardening into our newborn son. Purchasing this book may have been a bit premature, but it provides some excellent guides on how to not only include your child in the development of gardening plots, but how to present gardening in a way that will interest and involve your child. I'm excited to begin this with my son and I'm glad this book provides so many different options to teach about the importance of gardening and how it can be fun for people of all ages. If there was any reason I wouldn't give this a perfect review, it's that the book could be made in a higher quality. This is a children-focused book about being outside and working in dirt, yet it's printed like any other book. Could be a bit more resilient, like many other children's books or older cookbooks.

Good for children as well as adults
R.I.P. Mel Bartholomew. Thank you for this contribution to children! Purchased for a seven-year old (and parents) with an avid fascination of plants. Large, shiny, flexible cover with many glossy photographs of real-life young gardeners inside that a child can connect with. Puzzles and learning games included. Simplifies many concepts, such as composting and photosynthesis, which is useful for beginning adult square-foot gardeners as well as for children.

A repeat of the "Square Foot Gardening" book
I have the "Square Foot Gardening" book already, but I thought this edition would have new ideas; it doesn't. The only difference in the two books is Mel suggests making a 3x3 bed instead of a 4x4 so kids can reach the middle easier. It talks about square foot gardening at schools, which is a wonderful idea, but I got the book as a home gardener with kids.

Perfect resource for schools or daycare centres
Large focus in this book on lesson plans/integrating formal learning. We just wanted something my kid would be able to read and learn from. This isn’t it. But perfect for a keen teacher or community outreach garden.

Great learning and teaching ideas
As a teacher I wanted to embrace SFG with my class. A LOT of information from the main book is repeated but if you are new to SFG and wanted to do this with children it would be an excellent starring point. The learning and teaching ideas are good and can be easily adapted for 3-18 as there are different ideas for a range of ages. Would be great for child minders and parents alike.
