Fabulous DAP

Fiio has done a lot of great work for the Audio Market, bringing what was once considered high end Audio into the Mainstream market. Fiio was renowned for the price to performance of its portable headphone amplifiers but recently it started getting into the Digital Audio Player (DAP) Market which in itself has been dominated by iPods. Fiio gave us the original X3 which gave us great portable audio at a reasonable price, but with Fiio being Fiio they always like to one up themselves when they can so they decided to give us the far superior Fiio X5 which was their first footing into Mid-Fi to High End Audio Market which is dominated by the monster names like HifiMan, Astell & Kern, iBasso, etc… So for Fiio to succeed they needed to bring everything they had learned and mastered from all their other products and put it all into the X5, and that is exactly what they did!Let us first talk about the build and design of the Fiio X5, I am one who chases after advancements in technology and science but when I say the X5 I was very pleased with the design decision taken by Fiio. On initial impressions people will get withdrawn due to no touch screen or fancy materials but what Fiio has done is taken what made the iPod a truly great product in its first instance and applied it to the X5 by simply using a Scroll Wheel, Physical Buttons and a nice sized colour screen with no fancy tricks. It’s minimal and simple! The chassis and housing are made of metal as are the buttons, the screen itself is an IPS Screen which is on the small size but fits album Artwork very well. Another great design choice is the inclusion of dual MicroSD Cards which I wish was a standard on DAP’s as it allows for two 128GB Cards for an overall storage of 256GB and for me my library is 170GB+ so this was a really great feature. Overall the design decisions made were to have a simplistic and well known function which has been derived from the original iPods.Ok so moving from the build we get to actual usability, this is where things can get a little big on the bad end. Now while the function of the device is designed to be minimal it can get a little confusing on first use, while the scroll wheel and centre button work as you would expect in most cases it doesn’t in some. For example when playing a track you would expect to simply scroll the wheel one way or the other to adjust the volume of the player but in fact this is used to change the track where as adjusting the volume of the player is done by a volume switch set on the left hand side of the device. What makes this even more confusing is that the bottom two buttons under the scroll wheel perform the same function of changing tracks as the scroll wheel does when on the now playing screen. Also at this moment I have to manually scan my library every time I put new tracks onto the storage which is annoying but i’m sure this will get sorted. The usability could've been done a little better as Fiio almost got it right but just missed out here.Right now the sound, this is a simple thing to explain as there is not much to say. It’s neutral which well controlled bass, detail mids and detailed highs with a great soundstage and separation. Simple really, with this device the music drives the sound not the player and so the sound will vary as you change the track which is how it should be. There is no coloration as far as I can hear and overall it does a fantastic job playing CD Quality and Hi-Res FLAC Files, I have not tested MP3 as I don’t use that format. So my final thoughts, well I haven’t touched on the other features of the X5 because I have no real need for them at this moment in time and therefore have no opinion on them for this review. But as a portable music player, which it is designed for, it’s a very capable player with loads of talent but maybe they could of done better with the software which if it was better would've made this an outstanding player. So do I recommend it? Possibly, the little brothers to this which are the X1 and X3K are probably better choices if you don’t need the dual MicroSD Card slots or are on a tight budget, however if you can afford it then go for it as you won’t regret it.

Sublime Quality from a Solid All-Rounder

So: what do you do if you like/want/need the storage capacity offered by the now-unavailable iPod Classic, and/or if you have an interest in listening to music from higher quality sources than conventional Audio CD? Well, there is a small but growing number of alternative players, anything from the Pono all the way through to the Astell & Kern range, which apparently offers sublime sound - but at an eye-watering price. So where does the X5 fit into this spectrum? In short, the X5 hits the sweet-spot somewhere in the middle: sublime sound for a reasonable price. This is a mainly-conventional audio player that offers a clear and distinct improvement in sound quality over an iPod, a welcome increase in capacity - with a pair of 128Gb microSD cards you've got 256Gb on tap - more capacity will be offered as the card capacities increase, all in a neat package. In use the X5 requires very little adjustment to get the hang of. The graphical, icon-based menu system is not difficult to figure out [does not require the sparse manual] and getting up and running requires little more than loading up some content and ensuring you have a good enough charge [Fiio recommend using a mains-adapter charger but it will work fine from it's USB cable connected to a computer. I tried my iPad mains adapter/charger and that worked perfectly]. In use, with a pair of Bose Quietcomfort 20i ear-buds, the sound is a significant improvement over my iPod. The sound stage is more spacious, it is easier to pick out individual instruments, and the presentation and timing of the music just seems more tuneful. Comparing the same content between iPod and X5 left no doubt as to the superiority of the Fiio player. A download of some super-high-definition content [an album offered at 192KHz sampling rate, 96-bit resolution instead of the CD-quality 44KHz, 16-bit] yielded even more detail and offered a smoother, more subtle, nuanced sound. If your musical tastes run to metal, rock, rap or any wall-of-sound styles, you may not experience quite such a step-change, but if you enjoy classical, pared-down Jazz, acoustic recordings or very clear, clean vocals [think Agnes Obel, Julia Fordham, Emily Smith, Tina Dico] then you're in for a treat. In case it's not obvious from elsewhere, you load content to the X5 using nothing more complex than i.e. Windows Explorer or an equivalent File Manager. The player can handle a wide range of file formats, including CD-audio (wav), iTunes AC4, MP3 and FLAC. Putting my iTunes content into the player was trivially easy, but once done it does require one brief step on the player to index the new content... And because the music is stored on removable SD cards, you can carry extra music easily, should you wish to do so.So here are some plus and minus points for the X5:-Plus Points- Excellent build quality; feels solid, robust and able to withstand a few knocks. Even comes with one fitted and 2 spare screen protectors, as well as an excellent rubber sleeve.- Sublime sound quality; easily trounces an iPod in the quality stakes. [ Note, however, you'll need to pair this with a top-quality set of ear-buds or earphones, so budget accordingly.- Upgradeable - as larger-capacity micro-SD cards are offered, so the player firmware will be adjusted to take them.- Because the player uses removable cards, you can carry plenty more music for the "cost" of a couple of extra micro-SD cards. Grab yourself a protective cover with storage slots and this is a major advantage over an iPod.Minus Points- This player is a little bit bigger than an iPod classic [say 10% or so in each dimension] and weighs a little more - about 50g or so, at a guess. This is odd seeing as the X5 does not have the need for an in-built hard drive like the iPod...- By default, there is a manual step required to "index" all new music once you add or change content on the player. It is easy [via the menu] but it's better generally to set this to automatic; however if you do this, each time you disconnect your player from a computer it will re-index it's content, even if no changes have been made. I have about 250Gb across 2 x 128Gb cards and it takes quite a while...- The controls of the player include 4 mostly-intuitive buttons and a rotating wheel with a central click-switch. The wheel works very well, but it's just not as slick as the likely-patented iPod classic circulate "pad".- Setting up the play-lists can be genuinely fiddly, depending upon the technology you use and your own personal skills with an editor. Additionally, although the player copes with 256Gb, because these are 2 x 128Gb micro-SD Cards, you store your play-lists on one of the two cards - and that play-list can only access content *on that card*. Not a major issue, but you will have to think carefully when you come to load up your player.Overall, this is an absolutely fabulous portable music player, offering good battery life, excellent capacity and stupendous sound quality for a reasonable price. It's one area of weakness is ergonomics - size and the operation of the wheel - but this should in no way detract you from a purchase. The X5 is the perfect way to cocoon yourself in your favourite music, in fabulous quality, with enough capacity to ensure that you'll never get bored with the content, even on long business trips or tours.Glorious.

Disappointing in the extreme

I read all the buyer and pro reviews before deciding to go ahead with buying this item. I got carried away by the hype and the rave reviews. I wish I had not bothered. I bought a pair of Philips Fidelio X1 headphones to go with it. They are excellent. On unpacking, I loved the industrial looks and the weight but that was the end of it. I have my own MP3/320 files and CD quality flac. I also bought a few hi rest music downloads to put the player though its paces. The sound was terrible. It sounded very confused in the mid and high frequencies and muddy in the bass, just very flat and unengaging. My usual music setup is the Fidelio X1's a Windows tablet and a FIIO E06 headphone amp. I use Qobuz for streaming CD quality flac files and this setup sounds amazing. I would have expected this player to 'blow my mind'. It didn't. Thinking I may have a fake unit, I checked its authenticity on the FIIO site and it was genuine. I tried to use it as a DAC with my tablet set up and couldn't get that to work. I exchanged numerous emails with FIIO in China, who were great. Very helpful and responded quickly, but they could solve the issue. In the end I sent it back for refund. I don't know if I had a 'rogue' unit but it was probably the worst piece of electronics I have bought and Ive got through a lot of hi fi equipment in my time. I don't consider myself an 'audiophile' as such but I love good quality equipment that delivers. The X5 came nowhere near.
