Midnight Cowboy (The Criterion Collection) [Blu-ray]

Half way through I jumped gun and wrote a glowing review of video quality, great movie all around. But an EDIT after finishing: This is the first ever hd blu-ray I've owned that freezes on screen and refuses to resolve play back after numerous tries. At the 1:28:11 mark the disc freezes for a few seconds then suddenly jumps ahead a full minute before continuing. It does this several times in about a 3-minute section. During freeze I'm unable to rewind, fast forward, I have to wait til it restarts on its own. This interruption is very distracting and takes me out of the flow. Upon disc inspection I see no obvious signs of damage, scratch, smudge, etc., so I'll be returning to Amazon for a replacement. I'm giving a 5-star anyway purely for video quality and greatness of movie, feeling confident replacement will rectify issue. UPDATE: Amazon doesn't offer replacement option for this title, only exchange for different blu-ray, or refund. I chose refund and will re order near future. Odd because Amazon has replaced two other blu-rays that got damaged in shipping past couple years. At least Amazon makes the free return procedure easy with no hassle.

Movies like Midnight Cowboy are rarely made any more in this era of CGI Summer Blockbusters. This is a deep character study of two lost people on the very fringe of what might be termed "polite society." It gives us a glimpse of New York City in the Sixties in all its grit and hustle. While initially given an X rating, the film is actually pretty tame by contemporary standards. I image that characters like Joe Buck (brilliantly played by the pre-crazy Jon Voight) and Dustin Hoffman's equally brilliant Ratso Rizzo would have been constantly dropping F-Bombs, and yet the dialogue still rings authentic. Ultimately the story is about the power of love and human connection that remains entirely deserving of all the acclaim it has received over the decades. And the Criterion Collection print is beautifully restored.

The quality of this blu ray dvd is excellent. The extras, not always a favorite of mine to watch, are well worth watching after you've enjoyed the movie. I saw this movie when I was in the Air Force. The film brought back a lot of memories, especially since I grew up in NYC and spent a lot of time in Manhattan when I was a teen.The characters were real examples of people I saw when i spent time around 42nd street and Broadway/Times Square. The last time I was in NYC was 1975 and that area was not the one I remembered from the 60's. What you see in the film IS what it was like in the 60's. Midnight Cowboy was, and still is, a great movie... buy it.

At least to my knowledge, this is the first home video presentation of "Midnight Cowboy" to open with the original theatrical Transamerica "T" United Artists logo which, to a classic logo buff, is reason enough to call the Criterion Blu-Ray definitive. Of course, there is so much more to explore and savor here that anyone even remotely interested in this film should take the plunge. Yet another example of why Criterion Collection is synonymous with 'definitive.' It's hard to imagine the presentation of this film, from picture and sound quality, to extras which align and amplify its place in history, will ever be bested. A must own.

A long-time favorite film I've seen countless times. I won't review this masterpiece. If you've seen it, you know. If not, I almost envy you the first time.The new Criterion transfer seems ideal. I was actually ok with the old WB DVD and a UK one I got later, which looks almost as good as the Criterion blu-ray. But the extras make this a must-have for fans of the film. Only the excellent docu on Waldo Salt is duplicated, and the new extras are tremendous.

A hustler from a small town played by Jon Voight, gets hustled in New York City by a man on the streets played by Dustin Hoffman. Midnight Cowboy has performances that may eclipse the movie; fortunately the script and with the abandon in which the director steers it to great heights saves it from being the case. There are so many moments when Jon Voight simply graces the screen with so much pathos, vulnerability and lets us inside his torment with the utmost credibility; this is a great actor! Dustin Hoffman joins him with his own great performance, which stands out as the best Dustin has ever done! Supporting these great actors is Schlesinger who uses simple but creative camera work and gives us something very, very special in one of his master works.

Good movie exceptional sound and picture quality if you liked the movie it’s a good pick up.

Great film to digital transfer. Superior as 95% of criterion releases always are.
