Clearwater CH0018 Lay-Z-Spa Chemical Starter Kit for Hot Tub and Spa Water Treatment (Includes Chlorine, pH Minus, pH Plus, Foam Remover and Test Strips)

As a Chief Engineer - mariner - I have to know how to deal with water because on a ship we make it from sea water and of course that means ensuring that it's safe to drink and clean with. Most marine engineers are very aware of the diseases that can come with poor quality water and that's why as soon as I bought a spa I bought the means to keep it sterile.Now, I also know that the chemicals enclosed are for domestic use and as such don't represent huge value for money given that I'm more used to buying this sort of stuff by the metric tonne...However, what this package of chemicals does do is make it easy to check and treat your water because it's essential to keep on top of it or you risk catching something nasty, very quickly.The instructions are clear and easy to follow and also enclosed is a set of dip sticks to check PH and chlorine levels.One thing to understand is that adding chlorine is not a one stop thing. Chlorine (despite the various Facebook posts) is not long lasting and very quickly it dissipates. If you have correctly dosed water one day, 24 hours later most of the free chlorine if not all will be gone thus leaving the water free to become contaminated. This is particularly problematic with spas because the water volume is low relative to the amount of people using it.Once stabilised I found that using this kit 5mg of the stabilised chlorine granules dosed once a day was enough to maintain my cheap inflatable spa in the correct zone for safe water. This is a slightly higher level than a pool for the reasons I've already noted.Only once did I have to use the PH reducer because I was a bit enthusiastic putting in the chlorine when I first set up my spa.Overall, an essential item for health and safety if you have a spa or pool.

This kit is ok but you will quickly discover that if you want to use your lazy spa often doing it with this setup is expensive. For example, the strips included in this pack work fine but are priced at £6.99 for 25. So if you get up in the morning and test your spa and it has a low reading and you add chemicals your going to be re-testing it again 3 hours later. At 28p a strip this is a near 60p a day just for test strips. Shop around and you can get just as good strips for the same price but for 50 or for £9.99 get yourself a digital PH tester. You will still need to use the strips for chlorine but I'll come to that in a minute. Second part of this kit is chlorine granules. Now this is confusing because the lazy spa manual says not use these in the lazy spa or a liquid or tablets. Now I don't know if they mean to make them into a liquid before putting them in the lazy spa (its not clear) but after using the correct granules every day I found I woke up in the morning and the levels were zero! A quick look online and people said use the chlorine tablets with the chlorine tablet floater that came with my spa. Sure enough one tablet in and a reading this morning showed a lovely balanced reading. So I would recommend using only the tablets. The foam remover I haven't used yet.. you get some foam with bubbles but it quickly goes. The PH plus and minus I have used a little bit. Overall I'd say yeah buy the kit but when you can to re-buy switch to tablets, get the cheaper ph testers and always research on price.

Good starter kit means I have every chemical I need, but finding I only the need chlorine, so that’s going down faster than others. Will just need to get that next time.But I guess that’s kinda obvious?Handy booklet inside too.If you have a colour inside of ur hot tub, try and keep levels from fluctuations as we had to put a fair amount in as we used it every 2 or 3 ....or 4 days, so would let it drop, as I think as a result of that we’ve stained the inside of the tub (top part blue, below water line lighter blue) not sure if this would happen if we put less in but every day?But that’s out fault and not really the review, this product is good and recommend it.Update -I recommend getting chlorine tablets aswell, means you can keep the chlorine level topped up.

Excellent starter kit, got us up and running, handy to keep for balancing the water in our Jacuzzi, although we find on a daily basis using chlorine tablets in the floater provided with the Jacuzzi makes for trouble-free use. If the tablets need a boost we can add or subtract using the chemicals in this kit. The tablets are sold on here by other sellers and are also recommended

Should of used Clearwater product's years ago, could of saved me a lot of time and trouble. My hot tub has never been this good. So easy to use ,very happy

After reading other reviews I ordered this to go with my new hot tub. Although you might be paying a wee bit more for the chemicals it's worth it if you've never had a tub before because you get a small quantity of everything you might need and the instructions are very clear. The test strips are easy to read and better then the ones that came with the tub. I got the tub up and running with no trouble. Definitely recommended if you're new to hot tubs.

This is great as a starter set for anybody with a new hot tub and learning about water quality and testing. It comes with everything you will need to get going but you will find you will use some of it much more quickly than other bits. The chlorine crystals, in particular, get used very quickly as do the dip sticks but I find the anti-foamer gets used less so. You will want to buy your next chemicals in larger quantities but this os a great way to get going. Definitely recommended for new hot tub owners.

As a new hot tub owner I ordered this set as recommended. I must say I have never used the foam reducer and did not need pH plus or minus, however they can become handy in the future.The test strips are very difficult to read - the only colour that is readable is chlorine. The rest don't really match the packaging. But I think it gives you some idea of what's going on with the chemicals in your spa.
