Today I'm a Monster (Cozy Reading Nook)

Hee Hee! If you are a parent or anyone caring for children you will surely be able to identify with this story! This 'monster' does not want to get out of bed but when he does you had better beware! His poor mom takes him to Kindergarten and on the way he tells the neighbor how much he loves his flowers but is going to pull the petals off and put them up the neighbor's nose! Uh Oh! Like a typical mom, she loves her little boy regardless reassuring him that he is still loved no matter how he behaves. She soothes him and the end of the story definitely shows a different little boy from the previous day.Well written? Yes, for the most part. I did find the following:"With monster strength, I tug if free,...." It should read, "I tug it free..."Other thoughts.... Depending on your parenting style you may or may not like this book. Let me warn you that there are NO repercussions shown for the boy's bad behavior.WARNING: The Kindle version of this book is NOT suitable for all devices so please check the list above to make sure you are not disappointed. I am very frustrated with this book. It is well-intended and might be good for a few children, but it is not what I wanted it to be and not appropriate for my 4 year old twins.This book is written for kids with extreme problems acting out. Kids whose only need right now is to deal with the shame they experience after they've calmed down.The message of the book is that Mom still sees the boy inside the monster and loves that boy even while the monster is acting out. To make this point, they make the boy/monster's behavior extreme and continuous for a whole day. I realize some kids go through day's like that, but it's the minority. It is certainly far beyond the 30-60 minute tantrums I get from my kids. The behavior in the book feels like it would give my kids additional, more destructive ideas about how to act out when they are mad and trying to upset other people.Yes, it is important to reduce the shame that kids feel about making mistakes. But teaching them they are still loved is only the first lesson for kids that act out like this. I was looking for a book that includes more than this. This book includes very little story telling about what to do after the monster is gone. No examples of being responsible for behavior, or cleaning up messes, or taking care of people that "the monster" might have hurt or upset. At the end of the story, the authors just have the boy interact with people he wronged as though nothing ever happened.Maybe some kids are so out-of-control that they need a book like this that is just focused on being loved and getting past the shame. I think the description of this book should be clearer about that target audience. Most kids are much smaller monsters than this, and most parents will be looking for a book that demonstrates taking responsibility after a tantrum is through.One final note -- As a single father, I am saddened by the complete focus on the MOTHER loving the boy. Dad is in the beginning and end of the story, but he is NEVER mentioned as seeing the boy, or loving the boy, or supporting the boy. It would've been so easy to include Dads as loving parents, too. Instead we get a weird, passive, by-stander for Dad.

This book was a gift for my nephew, a small monster in his own right. The story is well told and and done in a beautiful unique way. The overall moral is a common one, despite the monster's/child's behavior the mother will always love them and see the good child within. The illustrations are delightful and fit the rhyming story beautiful although some get lost in the spine which is unfortunate but small children will hardly care. This book is additionally buffed with coloring pages, some of which are straight from the story itself, in the back of the book. These are not the greatest quality and look a bit like they were created in a cheap paint computer program. However, this doesn't detract from the rich endearing story that this book presents.

This is the perfect book for ages 3 to 5 years old. I have a five-year-old grandson who I'm sure his mother sometimes thinks he is a monster! We see in this age range emotions that can be an overwhelming experience. This book nicely tells the story of a little boy who he feels he's a monster for the day. His claws are out & he does things he would normally not do! His mother is able to soothe him and see the little boy underneath the monster and reassure him with her love. I like this part of the story that is hopeful and not condemning in anyway for having "monster" like feelings. Embracing the child irregardless of how they're feeling and knowing that there is a child worthy of our love underneath is a wonderful message to give the children in our lives! The artwork was very fun! It is a well written story. Definitely one to teach about emotions in a safe space and loving manner.

I got this for my 3-year-old grandson. Super cute book with nice illustrations. I like that the print part is on a white background, as a lot of times the print is too small or on a dark background, which makes it hard for the adult to read to the child while letting them see the pictures. My grandson loved the story, and I know there is a lesson in there, but I am not sure if he understood that part and made the connection or not; although I am sure he will as he gets a bit older, as he tends to read his favorites over and over again. He did recognize that the monster was really a bad boy. He tends to choose his favorites quickly and will disregard a book after the first read if he doesn't like, but this one we have already read several times, so that's a plus! We are looking forward to more books by Agnes Green!

The great drawings really bring full attention and that really helps to deliver the message of the book.

My son loves it.. He has adhd and this hellped him to understand the thing he feels. And why ge might he feeling them

This wasn’t very broad. It was not well written and not at all what I was looking for

My son who is 5 really enjoyed this book . How ever the part that says" it sent the monster to its cage" my son wondered why it doest say instead that ' sent the monster to its cave" which I found really interesting so after that when I read it to him I chenge the words and he loves it!
