how big are they in the calf?

Not big enough, as far as I'm concerned. My calf is about 16-17 inches and they didn't work for me.

These come up in a search for wide calf socks but the description itself doesn't say they're for wide width. Up to what circumference do they stretch?

I would not consider these to be for a wide calf. I ordered them and while I like the way they look, they are regular knee socks. I have a 17 or 18 inch calf and these are way too tight.

Will these fit a large calf?

do these have an actual "heel"? Or are they like tube socks?

No heel, like tube socks. I found them very comfortable to wear--and so much fun.
