The instructions only show the metal caps and screws, but there are 2 each black plugs and clear plastic parts, what are these for/how to use?

The black plugs go in the middle of the clear plastic pieces. The clear plastic pieces go between the metal caps and the bar ends.

Can you use this bar without screwing in, just using the tension expansion only?

I would not advise it. The bar goes into metal 'cups'. The cups are screwed into the door jamb. We put enough tension on it that it pushes in the wood--I would think it still would not be enough tension to hold up a 150lb or greater person. Plus, if you are trying to avoid screw marks, the tension caused by the bar will make impressions in the wood anyway. Hope that answers that.

How much weight does this support without the screws?

We do not recommend using the bar to hold a person doing pull-ups. There is no guarantee of it holding maximum weight, without the brackets. However, when we do our quality testing, no screws or brackets are used. The bar is cranked very tight between two pieces of iron and 300 lbs is hung from it for hours. Hope this helps. Fitojo Team
