Have you read a little about permaculture, watched a few videos, or done an introductory course? Are you excited about the subject but unclear how to put it into practice for yourself? Permaculture Design: A Step-by-Step Guide is just what you need! In this unique, full colour guide, experienced permaculture teacher Aranya leads you through the design process from beginning to end, using clear explanations, flowcharts and diagrams. Whether designing a garden or farm, the steps offered help you identify how to create a more abundant, resilient landscape in your own specific situation. Permaculture Design: A Step-by-Step Guide is based on course worksheets which have been designed, refined and tested on students over time. Linking theory to practice, Aranya places the ethics, principles, philosophies, tools and techniques directly into the context of the process itself. While written for anyone with a basic grasp of permaculture, this book also has plenty to offer the more experienced designer. This guide covers; systems and patterns, land and non-land based design, site surveying and map making, project management, placement and integration, amongst many other topics. Please note that this book has been designed to be compact and easy to carry around as a reference. For this reason it focuses on the design process itself rather than duplicating the lists of plants and techniques already available in many other permaculture books. Review: Aranya's publications have always been a delight to read and to follow and this one is ... - To me, this book maps the world of Permaculture. When moving from simple design to something more complex, particularly if planning to buy land and designing your future around sustainable permaculture principles, or advising someone else who intends to do it, complexity grows so quickly that 'design tools' become essential in getting a clear understanding of what to do. Aranya's publications have always been a delight to read and to follow and this one is a masterpiece from an expert in the field and his book-making team. A truly massive amount of data is packed into a 191 page A5 size book yet the contents are so clearly and logically set out that the contents are easily read and readily understandable and it covers everything very thoroughly but without the slightest feeling of being condensed - an amazing feat in itself! Anyone considering going beyond the small garden, or who wants an interesting read and enlightenment, should get this book. It is also a must-have reference book for anyone's Permaculture library and a guaranteed re-read for lots of years to come. Review: Compact, clever and well designed! - Great book. Quite technical but full of great info and Aranya (who I had the pleasure of being taught my PDC by) is superbly clever and sets out a permaculture project in easy sensible logical steps. This is Def one for the jacket pocket while designing small or large projects.

Written for professional but easily applicable to designing your own garden or smallholding.
I liked its emphasis on planning a well laid out plot of land no matter what size. There is a lot of detail on mapping that is outdated, when you can use Google earth to map and measure your plot. It is a book about designing layout of land and is not about planting and growing crops / flowers etc

I have bought it before wanting to set up a garden, however from reading through, it covers the concepts of designing in great detail. Whereas other books tell you principles of permaculture and which plants go here or there. what the designs could look like. This book is all about how to design your garden. Such a great guide for those like me who will be starting from scratch with no design background

All business!
This is just about Project Management related to Permaculture. Nothing to do with the growing technical processes

Teaching Design
First of all, it's a fun book to read; easy format, font and language usage (especially for someone who's mother tongue isn't English). The book is more about general Design rules and how to teach designers to become teachers themselves, applied on Permaculture. Don't expect him to hold your hands via the book, you have to grow as a person by reading this and make your own decisions. Anyone who is interested in broadening their mind on gardening and the design thinking that goes behind it should read this book. The only down point is a lack of in-depth information, raw data examples for instance but this would make the book a lot bigger and uncomfortable to carry around. Enjoy reading it! I had a blast.

Step by Step Indeed!
Permaculture Design by Aranya fulfills the purpose that the author intended for the book: to be a straightforward guide that you can pick up and read just the section you need or all of it. Each chapter is well-written and uses plain language anyone can grasp. The parts, chapters, sections organization of the book makes it easy to find what you're looking for, and I appreciated the many online resources provided as well. The book is a bit of a slow read if have already read Permaculture: A Designer's Manual by Bill Mollison, and that would indicate Aranya took sufficient time to explain the basics to someone with no prior knowledge of permaculture. There is redundancy in the book, but again, this book is meant for anyone to be able to read in any order, so yeah, I think the author's objective for the book was accomplished. I did learn some new things from this book, too, so I find my time and money was well-spent on this book.

Absolutamente recomendable.
