Google Pixel 7 Pro: A Camera Powerhouse with a Few Drawbacks

As a long-time Google Pixel user, having owned everything from the Nexus One to the Pixel 5, the Pixel 7 Pro felt like the next natural step in my tech evolution. After spending some quality time with it, I can confidently say that Google has stepped up its game yet again. This phone is a photography powerhouse with an incredible screen, but it’s not without its quirks. Here are my personal highlights and a couple of the pain points.Camera: A Photographer's DreamIf there’s one thing Google consistently nails, it’s the camera. And the Pixel 7 Pro continues that tradition with a vengeance. The triple-camera setup—featuring a 50 MP wide lens, 12 MP ultra-wide, and a 48 MP telephoto—paired with Google’s AI-driven software, delivers photos that are frankly astounding. I’ve used it in all sorts of lighting conditions, and it never disappoints.Night Sight, in particular, is a game-changer. I’ve taken photos in near darkness, and the results are bright, clear, and detailed without that nasty noise you often get from other smartphones. The Super Res Zoom also surprised me. Zooming in up to 30x, I expected pixelated messes, but somehow Google’s AI magic produces crisp, usable photos that I wouldn’t expect from any smartphone.A fun bonus is the Magic Eraser feature. It’s incredibly satisfying to just tap and remove that random passerby in the background of an otherwise perfect photo. And the new Cinematic Blur video feature gives you that nice DSLR bokeh effect for those who, like me, dabble in mobile video shooting. However, the camera bump… oh boy. I get that Google needed space for those advanced sensors, but the protrusion is hard to ignore. It makes the phone wobble when flat, and in my case, it even interfered with wireless charging in my Tesla. It’s one of those small annoyances that doesn’t ruin the experience but can be a dealbreaker for some.Display: Stunning and SmoothThe 6.7-inch OLED display on the Pixel 7 Pro is one of the most stunning screens I’ve ever used. The colors are vibrant, blacks are deep, and everything looks razor-sharp thanks to the QHD+ resolution. Whether I’m gaming, watching Netflix, or just browsing, it feels immersive. The 120Hz refresh rate makes a noticeable difference when scrolling or switching between apps. Everything feels buttery smooth and responsive. Even outside in bright sunlight, the screen holds its own, making it easy to see details. The curved edges, while mostly aesthetic, add a premium feel to the phone’s design.Drawbacks: Fingerprint Reader and That Camera BumpNow, here’s where things get a little less rosy. The in-display fingerprint reader—while improved over previous models—still leaves something to be desired. It’s slow compared to what other phones offer, and it’s finicky if your fingers or the screen aren’t perfectly clean. There were moments where I’d try multiple times to unlock the phone, which, let’s be honest, is annoying when you’re in a rush. And then, as mentioned earlier, there’s the camera bump. Aesthetically, I’m not a fan, but practically, it’s worse. Without a case, it feels like you’re always risking scratching the lens or tipping the phone over on a flat surface. It’s a trade-off for such a powerful camera system, but still a bit of a nuisance.Clean Android ExperienceOn the software front, the Pixel 7 Pro is a breath of fresh air. Stock Android 13 with zero bloatware. I can’t overstate how much I appreciate that. No unwanted apps cluttering up the system, and the phone runs fast and smoothly right out of the box. Plus, with Google’s hardware, you’re always first in line for Android updates, which is a nice perk for long-term users like me.ConclusionIn summary, the Pixel 7 Pro is a beast of a phone, especially if you’re big into photography or simply enjoy a clean Android experience. The camera is easily the best I’ve used on a smartphone, and the display makes using the phone a real pleasure. That said, the fingerprint reader could be better, and the camera bump is definitely a love-it-or-hate-it feature. If you’re like me and value cutting-edge camera tech and a clutter-free phone, the Pixel 7 Pro will not disappoint. Just be prepared for a few quirks along the way.

Can't beat the price. Mine had a very nice screen protector pre-installed.

Got my renewed phone in 3 days from order. Went with the 256GB version for some extra storage as it cost like 3$ more than the 128 at time of buying. It has some scratches and small dents; Really just stuff you would expect from normal use that I have covered with a case and stickers regardless. The sim tray was a bit bent, but I had a spare from another pixel I own, so not really a problem for me. Phone was unlocked as stated and has a very nice screen protector pre-installed. Fingerprint reader works, camera works, flash works, battery life seems good in these first 2 days. So far all the normal phone functions are functioning as phone functions should function - functionally. Came with a charger (block and cable). Will update if anything breaks or there are some gremlins.

Google pixel 7 pro

***update review *** so after having the phone for a while, I realize it does not hold charge well and dies in the middle of the day. It also doesn't work well on speaker phone everyone says they can hear themselves echoing which makes it unusable.I've had my google pixel 7 pro for a week now and this phone works excellent was easy to switch over to metro by t-mobile all in had to do was call them over the phone program and insert my old sim card. The phone does have any scratches looks brand new everything works I'm glad I saved money on this phone. The only issue I have is the battery life doesn't stay charged all day.

Great Budget Option for 2025

2025 This is the best Phone you can buy for under $300 it's a steal. I purchased my Girlfriend this phone. I have the Pixel 9 Pro and Honestly if you didn't know you would think her phone is the newer model. Make sure they actually send you the Carrier Unlocked Phone. I had to return a Phone that was locked to Verizon Network. Smartphones peaked about 4 years ago. Save your money and buy this instead of the latest model.

Solid device, but has cosmetic issues

Very good phone. I bought this phone as an experiment phone that I can download custom operating systems on without being worried about damaging my daily driver phone and I've got some thoughts. This is a renewed excellent grade and I would say it fits relatively loosely in the excellent grade. Mostly it fits perfectly in terms of functionality and battery life. I've gotten lucky with renewed phones before that turned out to just be new open box returns but these phones are 3 years old now so the possibility of that is getting pretty low. It's got some scratches on the screen that aren't visible unless under direct light, and it's got a lot of strange residue dots on the back glass that won't come off no matter what kinda like someone sprayed it with bug spray and just never cleaned it off (don't ask how I know what happens when glass is sprayed with bug spray). Which is whatever to me. I specifically wanted a cheap phone I didn't feel bad about if it got bricked. But I'm writing this review on it if that tells you anything. Very solid device; only issues are cosmetic.

Pixel 7Pro was like new

After absolutely destroying my 2 year old 7Pro by accident, I looked at upgrading to the new 9Pro vs buying another 7Pro. I decided the improvements and performance aren't significant enough to warrant the huge price point for the 9Pro and the camera features in my 7Pro were actually better.I saved several hundreds of dollars buying this phone and got 512gb of storage at the same time. All my cases fit this one as well. The phone itself has worked flawlessly for 2 months now. I just popped my original AT&T SIM card in and was connected immediately Because it's a Google to Google phone swap, literally everything transferred with a few clicks and I was back in operation without even getting a headache or cursing.
