Surprisingly efficient

My notebook has 2 video cards, each has it's own fan. The fan of the first video card is also the main fan for the system, so it's responsible for cooling the CPU as well. Before applying any cooling solution, I measured that both the CPU and GPUs were reaching the maximum temperature, which is about 99C, and at that temperature devices throttled themselves down, and that's the best case scenario, or crashed - that's what NVidia resorts to sometimes when temperature increases too rapidly. That is - under heavy load, of course, such as modern 3D computer game that requires the power of two video cards combined. The temperature of CPU under light use was around 50C, which is OK for core i7 Haswell chip. The first, main GPU was always a few degrees hotter than the second one.I applied the Opolar LC06 on the first fan, which is responsible for the system and is generally under heavier load. The result was 10C difference for CPU in idle, 30C for CPU under heavy load (so it basically doesn't go above 70C anymore) and the GPU with Opolar now doesn't go above 74C, while the second one, without Opolar, still reaching 95C. The difference is dramatic. The cooler itself is powered from microUSB cable, and I connected it to external charger, instead of USB port. Many laptops these days don't have enough USB ports, and mine has only 3, two of which are taken by USB hubs. It's not the best idea to draw the power from the USB hub, hence I simply connected it to external power supply. It didn't noticeably affect the performance of the cooler, but improved the brightness of LCD display - when connected to (externally powered) USB hub, the fan works like it should, but the LCD display is dimmer. Speaking about the display, it is displaying both the temperature and the mode of work (manual / automatic) and is not distracting at all. When connected to external power supply, it has to be turned off separately from computer, but it's not a problem, as there is an on/off button on top of the fan, which first changes the mode of work, but on second touch turns off the device. If it would be connected to the USB port of the computer, then it would turn on computers shut down, of course. The fan is very quiet. In automatic mode it depends from the temperature - it becomes louder at about 41C and is whisper-quiet under 30. If the fan is not turned on, it rather blocks the work of internal fan, so make sure you don't have turned off Opolar on working computer.I have tested this with and without the top of the class cooling pad from other manufacturer, and noticed that the cooling pad is nowhere near as efficient as Opolar and is way much louder, hence if I would have to choose between the two, I would get the Opolar without hesitation. The cooler has two ways of attaching it to the notebook - the "temporary" and "permanent". In first case, it's using gravity and rubber-covered fasteners, that would prevent the lid from being properly closed, and in second case you would have to glue (with attached 3M tape) the little platform to the back of your laptop. In many designs it would prevent you from removing the back-plate of the laptop, so I am using the temporary method and I'm OK with the lid not being closed completely. So, while it's not the most elegant way to get extra cooling, the effectiveness beats the insignificant inconvenience of fastening. In other words, I wholeheartedly recommend to get this cooler and use it to save your laptop during this summer.

Keeps Your Laptop Cool and You CPU Cores Running At Higher Speeds!

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.  When opening the box of the Opolar LC06 laptop cooler there were what looked like a lot of pieces that needed to be assembled to get this thing working. After looking closer and reading the small manual that was supplied, I realised how easy it really was, and within minutes the cooler was attached. My Dell laptop is used for rendering a lot of videos for my wife's business, and always gets extremely hot when doing so. Until making this review, I had no idea of the other affect heat was having on the laptop. Not only did the track pad area get uncomfortably hot to the touch, but now I see that the CPU bus speed drops off as well, taking even longer to render the video.I decided to give the LC06 a good test, to see what effect (if any) this type of cooler could have on the usual running of my laptop. The results are staggering actually, not only does it keep it cooler, but it allows the CPUs to run at faster bus speeds due to the lower heat levels.WIN WIN!Mounting:this was a lot easier than expected. I simply attached the orange plastic piece to the lower side of my laptop by the fan exhaust port, pushed on the correct flange for the cooler (there's several options for this, in differing sizes, so its bound to fit. My did - very snug!). Then clipped in the metal piece to the bottom of the cooler and slid the metal piece into the orange plastic I previously attached to my laptop. Voila, snugly sits against the exhaust grills of my laptops cooling fan.Powering:Simply attach the supplied USB lead to the LC06 and plug into a spare USB port on your laptop.Operation:The unit starts in an auto mode and displays the temperature on the top. The auto mode does an excellent job of keeping temperatures down by increasing/decreasing fan speed while minimising fan noise when not required. There's also a manual option that gives you the ability to speed up and slow down the fan speed at will as well, but I have not needed this.Overall View:I didn't realise I needed this unit until I got it. Having the CPU cores slow down, increasing processing time when the laptop gets hot is not something I had thought about before. But now I have the unit, it's attached always, giving me the fastest processing my laptop can give (which is what I bought it for!).It's a very well designed unit, easy to operate, easy to fit, and works.I've attached a photo of the unit in situ, and a speeded up video of an HD render with and without the LC06 attached. You can see for yourself how the LC06 kept the core bus speeds higher than when my laptop was left to cool on with its own fan only.Hope this is helpful.

Good build quality, but poor fit & poor performance (in my case, at least)

I tried this with a 4th generation MSI GT80-2QE (MSI GT80 Titan) laptop. Although the rubber seal I used (the large grey one) was large enough for the vent, the "temporary installation" suction pads were useless for keeping the Opolar device in place. I had to fold paper up and place it underneath the Opolar device in order for it to maintain a seal.Once I had maintained a seal, I tested out the efficiency of the Opolar device using "Rise Of The Tomb Raider" on max settings. The Opolar device *INCREASED* the temperature of my laptop! Whether this is a testament to the superior cooling properties of the MSI GT80 or whether this is poor cooling performance by the Opalar device, I cannot be 100% sure. However, if I am paying extra money to cool my laptop down, I would expect the Opolar device to assist with the cooling process.Other users have reported that it works for them; it didn't work for me.P.S. I am a techie who works in the IT industry - I am not a novice who bought this device and is unaware of how to use it.
