DYMO LabelManager 160

EDIT: March 12th 2016. Six months down the line and my little machine has broken. I bought a mains charger so it didn't gobble up batteries and it was used maybe once a week for about 20 minutes at a time. It suddenly decided it was fed up with printing and so started to spew out copious amounts of tape with no print on it. However, if you held it up to the light you could faintly see the outline of the writing on it. I contacted Dymo and one of their associates took me through the process of attempting to find the fault. This didn't work so on receipt of proof of purchase and a photo showing the non-existing printing I was immediately offered a replacement. I duly produced the evidence and packaged the offending article back to Dymo (freepost). I then sent them a copy of the proof of postage and the next day after the phone call to Dymo I received an email telling me a replacement had been dispatched. Thanks Dymo. Good customer service is obviously one of their strong points and it is so refreshing to experience it. I am totally in love with my little label maker. For years I have been writing on 2ml perfume decant bottles with tiny writing. Granted I do have rather nice handwriting because I study calligraphy but the old eyeballs are not as sharp as they once were and tiny writing has to take a back seat now. I will come clean though. I actually called the Dymo company and explained what I needed one for especially as some of the more expensive models only seemed to have larger font/tape sizes. Thanks to Rick who took the time and trouble to tell me what I needed I now have a very modestly priced machine to make proper printed labels and all topped off with sticky backs so I don't have to put clear sellotape over the labels anymore. I also want to say how easy it is to use. I haven't tried to use any of the more elaborate symbols etc. but then I can't actually foresee a need to use them. Besides if I do, there is an excellent review by a fellow reviewer who actually went to a lot of trouble to compare it against another brand of label maker which is well worth checking out to see which would be best for your needs. I am also something of a luddite when it comes to modern technological gadgets. If anyone can break them within minutes I can. Even an abacus is not safe in my hands. But this little machine is a dream. I had it up and running within minutes of it arriving and will now probably spend a lot of time making little stickers for perfume bottles. I think I will invest in a 9volt adapter though as I can imagine it will whizz through 6 AAA batteries in no time. Also it will be interesting to see how many labels one replacement tape will make. I know they are much longer than the one given with the machine. Just for interest here is a photo of the first tape I made. One of the letters was a little squished but each one afterwards came out fine. I used font size 8 and it fits a 1ml perfume decant perfectly.

I bought this because my label manager PnP would not work after updating my IOS. I loved this as I could save labels, easily write labels using my keyboard and view what they looked like before printing - BUT I was stuck until a new update is created - which would probably be ages... I bought this simple Label Manager 160 as a standby/ fill in until that day. I found that it really was not a hardship using a button push qwerty keyboard and was able to fire off ten or more labels so easily after getting to grips with the size fonts needed - I was even able to generate two liners so really pleased with myself. I was nearly tempted to buy the label manager 280 which can also be connected to the computer to design labels (but not on mine until the software is updated) has a rechargeable battery and wall adaptor supplied with it. I opted for this cheaper version as other reviews mention that the batteries last for a very long time so decided not to worry about that aspect. This is supplied with a starter Dymo D1 tape (3m only) but enough to get by with. I bought some very cheap alkaline batteries from a budget grocery store for £2.59 so this was a real deal as I purchased a previously returned item and as it turned out a true bargain as this really works well.

My requirements were quite simple when I was looking for a label maker; something that could print 1/2" labels at a reasonable pace and good quality. Nothing more, nothing less. I didn't have many to print, just to label a few switches inside a vehicle I was preparing. I'm really glad I opted for the Dymo, it's perfect! the labels print well, and quickly too. There's a wide range of emojis to choose from too, if that's your thing. And there seems to be a lot of customization including but not limited to, borders, text orientation, text size, label width, emojis plus more other little features. The machine itself feels solid and well made, and replacing the labels is a doddle. One criticism is that sometimes on first loading a different label into the Dymo it can end up jamming up and needs to be manually pulled through the slot first, but I don't know if this is normal, it may well be but it is slightly annoying at times. The included black on white labels are OK but don't stick all that well compared to some others I have used. As mentioned above, I only got this with the intention of labeling a few switches (Less than 20 in total), but now I can't stop! Labeling open dates of jams/sauces etc. labeling GoPro batteries so they don't get mixed up with my friends when we all go out! It's great, it drives the other half mad but I love it. Wouldn't hesitate recommending this to anyone looking for a cheap, reliable printer for occasional& light usage.

As you can tell from the title of review, I feel batteries don't cut it. I put in the required cells to get the machine up and running, and out of curiosity pressed "print" after having put in my line of text to see if the machine was able to print on batteries alone. It said "printing" then it stopped and nothing more seemed to happen, I did it again, more "printing" and again, nothing. So I rummaged around to get a power supply of the correct voltage, polarity, current rating etc and plugged that in, same result. I then decided to investigate, and found that I had indeed printed about four labels for my power amp, but they had got jammed inside the machine, and it took quite a while to extricate them. My guess is the 6 cells, despite not showing a warning of low battery power, weren't man enough to push the tape out of the machine. Either that or the Dymo reel that they bundle with it had jammed. My observations: Seeing as it has worked faultlessly since that initial hiccup, and following reviews stating the inability of the AAA cells to provide enough power, I would buy a wall wart power supply from the off. I would also pull a little of the tape out of the cartridge as I inserted it into the Dymo, in case it's tempted to jam again, as the tapes are typically 5 or 7 metres long, a centimeter loss at the beginning is nothing.

Bottom line = I love this label maker. We had this label maker at work for several years, and when I wanted one for home I researched lots of options, but settled on this one as it has never caused any issues at work... And once you start labelling things you won't want to stop...I particularly love labelling my Tupperware storage containers with clear labels, and have labelled all my plugs and sockets... there are several different sizes of fonts, you can do bold, italic, underline, and even vertical text, there are also little graphic images you can add, you can get lots of different colours of tape, and switching them over is a breeze... You can buy a power adapter, but I just use batteries, and they seem to last a pretty long time. I have also dropped it several times, and it is rugged and has no sign of any damage, just in case you worry about that sort of thing. It is fairly heavy (with all the batteries in), so you'll probably want to lie it on a surface to create labels of any length, but it is more than portable enough to carry around labelling as you go. I know that there are fancier label printing machines out there, but the simple to use, affordable, well made Dymo LabelMaker 160 is all you probably need!

After using the old plastic raised letter tape type of DYMO machine for quite a few years, I now wish I'd had the DYMO 160, because it gives a more professional look to what is a large collection of laminated photos, military reference Books and DVDs, with over 300 photos and almost 2,700 books and DVDs. I'm donating all about my life of being a Sailor in the RAF Marine Branch, which was not only an unusual trade that finally became privatised in 1986, just 5 years after I had to leave the RAF due to being injured and unable to stay in it, though I did complete 12 years service, with the last 6 months ashore on light duties. On going to my nieces house on the IOW several years ago I visited a Tank Museum, but it was a dump and went bankrupt. About 5years ago it was taken over by a charity, and on going to see it the whole place was in the midst of a large improvement schedule, as my local Heritage Centre had a change in the running of it, the new directors sent me a letter to inform me that they no longer wished to have my large collection of military equipment and weapons on show, though it attracted thousands of visitors over the 11years the collection was on display. The EU had brought in laws that meant that I couldn't sell or give my collection of weapons away, except to another museum, so I had a meeting with the manager of the IOW museum, and they agreed to not only accept the whole collection, and after asking me for ideas on improvements to the large former ex-Army camp from WWII, they told me they'd see what they could do. On starting taking down as much as my 7 seat car could carry, the weapons were to go in specially built display area that has floor to ceiling glass panels, so the MGs could be displayed on their Anti-Aircraft and Ground Tripods and Bipods. I'm now making labels to go on the laminated, photos, certificates, newspaper cutting, official forms and letters of commendation I am also donating, at their request, as looking at a photo doesn't let people know why, where, and when was it taken, and as my suggestion to have a reference library has now been completed the DYMO is already being used to print out numbers to go with the write-ups on each photo, though they are all on Disc. Even what is left of my collection will go to what is a museum that even had a large brass plaque made to inform visitors that quite a large number of the weapons on display were donated by me, which I only found out when I last went there before COVID struck. And the DYMO will be gong down as soon as possible, as more items will be easily identified, with literally thousands of small items still to label.

This was an interesting learning experience. I was split over whether to buy a more expensive printer than I could connect to over USB, or a cheaper one I had to type everything into. I have to say, simpler option fits my requirements better. I think the USB-connected printers, which also print larger traditional-sized labels rather than strips of tape, are better suited to businesses addressing envelopes etc. There's only so much you can type onto one label, and factoring in the time cost of booting a computer etc against switching on a handheld unit, it's actually faster for its niche. It would be nice if it could store a few labels and scroll through them; it'd also be nice if there was an option to wipe the display in one command. Uploading your own clipart/symbols would help, too. The labels I replaced didn't use clipart, so it's not a major limitation. If I had bulk labels to do, I could still print them via a computer and a printing service. I have a lot of sorting out and organising to do, and handwriting each label, slowly so it's legible, onto post-it notes, cutting them to size and sellotaping them on so they stay put, is a right pain. This machine speeds all that up, and I have a nice clear label that not only I can read at speed, but that's clear to other people as well. I've also been able to label the cupboards (not all of them, just where things are that other people ask for: Mugs, spoons, the fridge, and so on). The tapes do sometimes jam, and when they do, that's usually goodnight to the tape reel concerned, but I've found this usually only happens when the reel is almost used-up anyway. The tapes are actually contain three tapes together: The background tape with one side sticky, the backing layer which peels off, and the print layer, which gets heat-bonded to the background, and is stored inside the tape cassette after it's been used. This also means the tape won't go all-black etc if it gets heated, like normal thermal paper printers. It's interesting how small the actual print head is. Most of the tape reel is used for storing tape, and for dispensing it in a smooth & reliable fashion. There's a trick to peeling off the backing, BTW: It splits along the middle, so bend one end of the tape widthwise, and a corner will lift off: Grab that, and peel off that section entirely. Then turn the tape around and repeat the process for the other section.

Funciona muy bien. Lo recomiendo. Llego antes de lo previsto

J'ai cette étiqueteuse depuis plusieurs années. Fonctionne très bien. Je recommande

TL;DR I recommend this label maker. The print quality is good. I had some problems with print quality over the past few months that I eventually traced down to one bad AAA battery (more on this later). Usage I use this label maker to mark cables for my work test setup. I work a hybrid job, testing embedded systems. I find it useful to know what cable is what by looking at the labels, thereby saving time from having to trace each through the rat's nest of cables on my desk. I label the devices, too, so that I know what changes I made to the insides. I use this to label things for my hobbies and things around the house, too. It's a great time-saver to quickly know what's what. By labeling things, I force myself to declutter, clean, and organize. By nature, I'm a messy person and have stacks of junk everywhere in different parts of the house. I'm doing better these days though about cleaning up the clutter. Initially, Print Quality Was Great When I first got this Dymo label maker, the print quality was excellent. Yet, over the next 6 months the print quality gradually decreased to the point that text was illegible in the last few months. I followed the Dymo cleaning instructions. This involved using wiping the printhead with 70% isopropyl alcohol on a q-tip. The print quality did not improve. I noticed the printhead had two dimples, and I seriously doubt I did this with my q-tip. These two dimples seem consistent in depth and at the same distances from each edge of the printhead. So, they looked like a design intention. The next thing I tried was to recharge the lithium batteries so that they are at full charge. These batteries worked well with the Dymo months ago. Still, the print quality was alright, even after I increased the strobe value from 4 to 8 (max). While writing this review, I decided to measure each of the 6 AAA batteries with a multimeter. 5 had 1.517 V and 1 had 0 V. I replaced the bad battery. The print quality improved significantly! As you can see from the included picture of the print quality, “Test”, “Test8”, and “LED turns green when charged” are both at strobe 7, 8 and 8, respectively, but with the one bad AAA battery installed. "PSUB" is at strobe 8 with the good cell. "PSUB" is at strobe 4 with the good cell. Even at a lower strobe value, the print quality looks great. So, it matters that each battery is providing enough juice, or you will see noticeable degradation in print quality. There's no onboard diagnostics that warn you batteries are low. The telltale sign is gaps in the formation of the lettering.

Easy to use and generally creates good quality printed customizable labels. I use it to print out sayings and Scriptures for my tags, cards, and other paper crafting projects instead of relying on pre-made stickers that might not say exactly what I want to say. I had an issue the second time I used it (so far I have only used it three times, so we will see if the problem repeats) in that it didn't print (tapes came out blank) until around the fourth try (thus wasting precious tape), then it worked perfectly. It is a bit cumbersome to use--I thought the process would make things more efficient for me and I can't say it necessarily has--however it is an invaluable tool to add to my paper crafting tools and I am happy I bought it.
