A groundbreaking approach for practicing courageous love and resilient intimacyโfrom the creator of Internal Family Systems therapy Do loving relationships end because couples lack communication skills, struggle to empathize, and fail to accommodate each otherโs needs? Thatโs a common belief within and outside of the therapeutic worldโฆ but what if itโs all wrong? In You Are the One Youโve Been Waiting For , Dr. Richard Schwartz, the celebrated founder of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, offers a new wayโa path toward courageous love that replaces the striving, dependent, and disconnected approach to solving relationship challenges. The breakthrough realization of IFS is that our psyche contains multiple parts, each with a life of its own. Most problems in relationships arise because we unknowingly burden our partner with the task of caring for our disowned and unloved parts. In this book, youโll discover essential insights and tools to foster healthy dialogue with your parts and your partner, including: โข How to recognize and disarm the cultural assumptions that create shame, guilt, and isolation in relationships โข The Three Projectsโwhy we fool ourselves into thinking we must change our partner, change ourselves, or give up on true intimacy โข Finding and Healing Exilesโtransforming the way our most vulnerable parts influence the way we treat each other โข How to reorient relationship conflicts to help each of us grow toward the Selfโthe center of our clarity and wisdom โข Courageous Loveโbuilding resilient intimacy with each other and our parts to create healthy, lasting partnerships โNo one can do the work of healing our orphaned parts for us,โ says Dr. Schwartz. โYet when we begin with Self-leadership, a relationship can become a safe place in which we help each other heal and grow.โ Here is an invaluable guide for therapists and laypersons alike to promote connection, trust, and understandingโwithin yourself and with the one you love. Review: an insightful and transformative resource; a new lenses to see yourself and your partner through - As a middle-aged marriage and family therapist practicing in California, I often encounter couples grappling with complex relational dynamics that seem to trip them up time and again. Dick Schwartz's book, "You Are the One You've Been Waiting For," offers profound insights that resonate deeply with my work and enhance my understanding of the intricate dance between personal growth and relationship health. Schwartz, the architect of Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, invites readers to delve into their inner landscapes, encouraging a keen introspection that is both refreshing and empowering. What makes this book particularly impactful is its accessible translation of IFS concepts into everyday relational contexts. This is vital for therapists like me who work with diverse couples seeking harmony amidst their internal and external worlds. Through a blend of case studies and theory, Schwartz illuminates how disparate parts within ourselves can shape our perceptions of our partners, often masking the true sources of conflict. He positions the "Self"โa central tenet of IFS characterized by traits like curiosity and compassionโas the leader capable of bringing cohesion both internally and interpersonally. This model underscores the significance of self-awareness and self-leadership, ideas that are transformative not just for clients but for therapists navigating their own personal and professional relationships. In the therapeutic room, this approach provides a valuable framework that empowers clients to explore their internal conflicts without judgment and nurtures a compassionate understanding of their partners. Schwartz's encouragement to embrace individual parts with curiosity rather than criticism echoes well within the diverse narratives that I encounter, offering a pathway to empathy and growth that resonates with me on a personal level as well. Practical and powerful
I love how IFS was tackled in a way that is relatable and less oriented to theory. This is a great reference for someone new to the IFS mode of healing.

If you are working on Gaslighting, bullying, and emotional intelligence, get this book!
Novel approach that seems close to Imago Theory and incorporates fragments from many wisdom traditions. As a person with PTSD related issues, I definitely found relief and advice in this book that was perfect for me. Examples were easy to follow, realistic, and clearly relevant to the point. I like the examples, the structure of the book, and the straightforward language and advice, and reading it happened to coincide with one of my worst bullying encounters of this year. I feel it helped inform my choices, reduce my reactive responses, and improved my confidence in asking for what I wanted without criticism. Many subtle points that make a huge difference in action. Intuitive, yet not obvious, especially when one is triggered. Loved it!

Such an important book
I liked his book called "No Bad Parts," and how this changed the work I am doing for/with myself. However, this second book, "You Are the One You Have Been Waiting For" tackles 'parts' work in the context of relationships. This is an even more potent place to do parts work, as relationships are the place we work much of ourselves out. This book will help you understand that your partner cannot be responsible for healing your parts, indeed only you can do that. And a good partner can show compassion and support without getting entangled in your parts work, but this requires lots of consciousness on both people's parts. I found "You Are the One You Have Been Waiting For" invaluable and easier to follow than "No Bad Parts." I recommend this to anyone who is in a relationship in which individual 'parts' are showing up.
