You can use it as a full-fledged desktop computer, for storing files locally instead of on the cloud, and for a myriad of projects. I'm even running "retropie," a software that allows you to play old videogames.

Q: Is it possible to connect directly to the sata expansion board to load the os? does it require power other than usb? j2?

No additional power supply is required, as long as the PogoPin of the disk adapter board is in good contact with the Raspberry Pi and the power supply is normal.

Q: Can you run the os directly off of the ssd without configuration/scripts?

Yes, once you burn the OS image onto a USB drive, MicroSD or whatever you can just install like you would on any other computer. There are plenty of great tutorials out there if you're stuck!

Q: Does this need any soldering for step 7?

No, each wire has connectors in both ends. Just plug it in the corresponding terminal and you’re done.
