Question 1

So does the stand just rely on "balancing" the laptop?  That is what it looks like.  In other words, how sturdy is the laptop when it is in this stand

It's quite sturdy and balanced. I have a 17" MacBook on it, and have never felt any concern about anything falling over. Occasionally I'll use the laptop's keyboard directly when it's on the stand, and it doesn't bounce or shake very much at all.

Question 2

Does this stand sit high enough to be able to put wireless keyboard underneath and type on it?

Definitely, there is about 3 inches of height clearance at the front of the stand and overhangs in front of the base of the stand by about 3 inches as well. If I slide my apple wireless keyboard under the stand until it touches the base about half the keyboard is covered by the overhanging stand. And there's room enough to type comfortably. I have the keyboard under the stand right now and I'm typing without hitting the laptop or stand.EDIT: Just in case I misunderstood your question, my answer above was assuming you meant could the keyboard sit in front of the base, but under the overhang. IF your question was could the keyboard actually sit ON the base of the stand and completely underneath the top of the stand then I would agree with answers below that say it's technically possible but the keyboard doesn't fit under there well, you won't be able to see the keyboard and your hands will hit against the top of the stand.

This product looks useful but I am looking for something that is foldable so I can carry it to school and coffee shops. Any suggestions?
