High in graphics!

This game is great for me (62+yo) I love the graphics where the engineer in the steam engine leans out the window and waves! The game play is streaght forward and relitively simple while still challenging. For those "gamers" out there who like a real hard challenging game that keeps you guessing, this would bore you fairley quickly and I would suggest Railroad Pioneer instead. If you like graphics then this is the game for you. The trains are highly detailed and you can even change the color and logo in mid game. The trains load and unload their cars with the raw product such as cattle loading and unloading the cattle cars, the coal and ore are loaded from bins into the cars, logs are loaded with cranes, fish are loaded with nets into tanks and the stations load and unload passengers and mail, and there is even people walking around the town and station that you can zoom in on to about 20 feet! This game apeals to kid in me and I think this game would appeal to most younger kids (even in the oldest of us) that arent hard core gamers.

For Kids *and* Grownups

Very addictive game. I have played hours upon hours now and neglected my family and chores in the process. I finally backed off and now play it every once in awhile. Most of it is XML file driven and I learned how to edit the files to change various settings along with adding industries, goods and cars to the original maps. This kept the game "fresh". There is also a hidden terrain map editor if you want to try and create your own (needs the patch first), although I have yet to make any of mine as beautiful as the included maps.Railroads! runs on Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8. Make sure you get the v1.10 patch. I can't comment on multiplayer as I never use it. The instructions for getting the patch and setting up the editor option are widely available on the internet. I would also suggest checking out the 3GB (LAA) enabler trick to avoid game crashes once ~3000 miles of track are laid. Also, you may want to turn off automatic game saves if you have an SSD. It writes them all the time, over and over again.

Sid Meier's on win 8.1

I run this on a win 8.1 PC desktop. It runs just fine but on occasion it crashes without warning, I think it has something to do with memory something or other. If you've never seen this before it's a railroad simulator. You lay track, buy engines, establish routes and select cargo or passengers, along with priority and more. There are scenarios to play with deadlines and goals, or you can build your own railroad empire and run it over time without the constraint of cost or profitability. The graphics are cartoon-like, nothing is to scale, sounds are slightly better than primitive, the interface is not intuitive, rail laying is restrictive; no stray lengths of rail can be laid - all must extend from existing track (you cannot lay track from, say, detroit to toledo, and Cleveland to Dayton. You must start where the game begins with one small section and attach everything else from that. This game is similar to Railroad Tycoon (circa 2002) but less advanced. I paid about $9, which is a decent value for this game.

Very Enjoyable and Fun

I'm reading all the bad reviews for this game, and I can't believe it! I own several Sid Meier games, and this is among the better ones (so far none beat Civ IV).The Pros:- Great graphics- Easy to learn- Similar to Railroad Tycoon series if you have played that before- Sandbox mode (though I have not even tried that)- Consequential play (for example, more highly trafficked cities and stops will grow more - and thus have both higher supply and demand - than less highly trafficked ones).- Easier track building and routing of trains (eliminates those hassles from the Railroad Tycoon series)- Levels well tailored to player's skill levelThe Cons:- VERY memory intensive: I am running a fully optimized Intel P4 2.93 GHz, 1024k RAM, with an after-market Radeon X700 graphics card and the game still begins to lag after a few hours of consecutive playing time at full resolution. Also, it will freeze if you run large programs in the background. And finally, my system always has low virtual memory upon exit.- Too simple / not enough options. Not as bad as "Sid Meier's Pirates", but still only a few buildings and car types.- Track laying still needs improvements. Tracks that seem to switch do not, etc.Overall, I find this game fun. It's definitely worth the $13 that Amazon is currently charging for it.

Unplayable

I tried loading this game on 3 different computers and it would not run properly on any of them. Customer support said my SiS Mirage Graphics Card was not supported. Well I guess my Dell and Toshiba arent either.

Old game but addictive

The game is showing signs of it's age but, is an addictive game. Relatively simple game to play. Can be played solo or on a LAN. A drawback is you can only zoom out a limited amount which limits your field of view. A patched .exe is needed to work with RAM over 2Gb. The Sid Meier's community has created numerous add on to give you even more play scenarios. The same community has a lot of FAQ's and guides. One can only hope the developer will release a 2020 version of the game while keeping the gist of it's original.

Runs well on XP only

The cover says Windows 7 and Vista compatible which is not the case. Did not try on Windows 7 but it did not work on Vista for sure. Other than that, it is easy to install and runs well on Windows XP. Note, the machine needs 512M+ memory. My son likes this game.
