Dreads [Mastalia, Francesco, Pagano, Alfonse, Walker, Alice] on desertcart.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Dreads Review: An incredible pictorial of the many facets of dreadlocks! - My loctician had this book on her coffee table during my last visit and I fell in love with my locks all over again. The book opens with an introduction by Alice Walker that recaps her first encounter with locks and her subsequent adoption of the style. Through this introduction, Walker addresses some of the common misconceptions about locks. "Dreads" continues with a historical perspective of locks and their political, religious and fashion roots. This is a great coffee table item. Not only is the book a great validation of the beauty and uniqueness of locks but it is also an excellent way to inform people of the facts about locks. I wish I had a copy of the book at the office when I started the locking process three years ago! Highly Recommended! Review: Universal Dreads - Dreads is a masterful work of superior photography accompanied by explanations of what dreadlocked hair means to each of the individuals included in the book. This book is a must-have for any true dreadlock enthusiast and an excellent conversation piece for a salon or living room coffee table. I was pleasantly surprised to see that desertcart actually carried brand new copies because the book was actually out of circulation for a while. Maybe with the re-emergence and popularity of dreadlocked hair the publishers decided to crank up the presses once again. Whatever the reason, I strongly suggest that you buy this book before it's no longer available. Dreads is a true work of art and offers unique perspectives that extend to many different continents and ethnicities.

Awesome art of dreads and wonderful lyrics of Alice Walker~
Love ths book. I use to own a hard copy and excellent conversation piece. My uncle borrowed it and I decided to get a new copy so that he can keep the one I lend him. The paperback is just as good. You just need to be careful if a child is looking through the book. I Would recommmend to anyone that wishes to see the beauty of natural dreads of people throughout the world.

Excellent read.
This was an interesting and excellent read. I received a deeper understanding of the origins of Locs. Often associated with the Rastafarian, the book gives an enlightened account of the religious ramifications and of other cultures embracing locs and the non-cutting of hair mentality. I enjoyed reading why many embrace this hair statement. The pictorial account was excellent as well.

the power of pictures
i find it sometimes best to inform people by simply placing a book on my desk to check out the response as well to inform....pictures are worth a thousand words! My coworkers are enthralled with the beauty of the black and white images..also the size of the images...... everyone from asian, indian, african and european decent magnifies the beauty and majesty of coiled hair....from refined american inspired locks...to the sea and salt enhanced locks of jamica...this pictorial pays tribute to the sublime beauty of locked hair. Is this pictorial exploitative as a another reviewer suggested? ..this does not appear to be the intention...the participants appear proud to contribute and demontrate a different kind of beauty. Since locking hair is a process that takes fortitude and time, this book is inspiration.

I bought this for my other half because he has locs and also because he always wanted the hardcover edition of this book. I surprised him one day by purchasing it as a gift. He still has the paperback version but this one has a different cover, so now he has two books to treasure. Also, the book holds a particular memory of a woman who passed in his life that originally had a copy of this book. She was an influential person in his development as a man/person, so I know purchasing this book meant a lot to him.

Superbly presented book including nothing less than absolutely stunning images from the artisan coupled with a steep history into various tribal beliefs including Rastafarian Culture. I totally recommend this book if it is a topic of interest for you. A perfect balance of imagery and quality information of the history of dreadlocks from the beginning to the modern day. You won't be disappointed with this book, it is presented in a surprisingly high quality paperback binding. Very large 144 page glossy paperback compared to what you would normally expect. Inspiring and aspirational throughout. Amen

I recently purchased this book and all I can say is its an inspiration to those who feel as though they need/want a better insight into dreadlocks and the lifestyle. Its a great insight into the varying cultural beliefs and reasons behind dreadlocks. I also wear my hair in dreadlocks but before that I always found myself searching for more, spiritually and culturally. Although many have locs for fashion and style reasons, this book can point those who are confused about cultural identity and spiritual being in the right direction.
