It’s Fantastic!
This is one of my all-time favorite guitar books. The songs sound really good. All of them have an interesting sound. And while all of them are relatively easy to play, they are really hard to master. It has taught me some new chord combinations and sounds I haven’t tried before. It isn’t a “teaching” book, but it has taught me lots of stuff regardless.I’ve played all the songs in this book, and am still using it! They are all such good songs. Most of them are in Drop D tuning. I had never tried this before and was a little leery of it, but it turns out to be awesome for Celtic songs. So easy! This isn’t a guitar book for beginners. I’d say it is for intermediate players. If you can already read some music and know your basic chords, then you’re golden. It does have tablature which helps at times, but I prefer the notes. And one really helpful thing here too is that the notes are marked with numbers telling you the recommended fingers to use.The CD sounds great. It’s very nice to listen to. I suppose a beginner who knows nothing could try this book with the CD and tablature only, but that might be difficult.Highly recommend!

It's a really great find on Amazon
As a serious student of the steel string acoustic guitar currently focused on flatpicking techniques and on Celtic music, I am very favorably impressed with this book/CD by Allan Alexander. It's a really great find on Amazon, the production qualities are high, the book and CD are both well done, they are effective learning tools. The songs Allan has compiled are beautiful, some hauntingly so. The arrangements are clearly depicted in both notation and tab. Celtic arrangements for flatpicking seem hard to find, yet this picking technique unleashes some of the qualities of the acoustic guitar in a different and wonderful way when applied to Celtic tunes. It's especially helpful that the author provided useful fingering position numbers in the notation, so that the guitarist can better approach the desired "keep the fingers down" technique that the author recommends. Thank you Allan Alexander for providing a great source of Celtic musical instruction for flatpicking guitarists!
