Nice watch

I bought this for my 90+ year old grandfather. He was wearing a Casio Waveceptor for years until the leather band broke. I gave up trying to replace the band and bought him this watch. It has a large face (larger than I expected) which makes it easy to read. The band is nice too. The only con i can think of is it doesn't have luminous hands or numbers.

Lots of confusion

First of all, the watch I received was not exactly like in the photo. Mine says E. Howard & Co. on the face, the finish is polished not matte and there is a pusher at 4 o'clock (this is used to switch between seconds and date on the digital display as well as for setting). The recessed pusher shown in the Amazon illustration is actually located on the other side of the dial at 8.The dial is highly readable during the day but lacks any lume or backlight for reading in the dark. The minute hand only moves once every 20 seconds. Seconds are displayed digitally and there is no second hand. This adds to the battery life, which is claimed to be two years. The listing information is also wrong - this is a "mens" size watch and the strap is black. The problems that some of the reviewers had with the watch mostly stemmed from not reading or understanding the instructions (which are also available online at the LaCrosse site). Set to wrong time or time zone and misaligned hands can all be corrected using different sequences of button pushes described in the manual. The manual unfortunately does not describe how to open the case (although it does tell you which battery to use - CR2025 lithium, which is bigger than a normal watch battery but not very expensive - should be a couple of dollars). The answer is not at all intuitive. The case opens from the front. If you look closely there is a notch at some point in the bezel where it meets the case. Anyone who knows how to change watch batteries should be able to pry the bezel off and change the battery once you point out the location of the notch. Most will expect a notch in the case back which is the normal place and when they can't find it they will be puzzled and perhaps turn you away. The watch is supposed to display a radio tower icon once it has successfully received the WWVB signal. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get mine to sync up in the few days I have owned it. However, the watch came preset to the correct time to within a few seconds (although I had to manually change the time zone, which you will have to do BTW if you ever travel - the watch does not "know" where it is). So so far it is just a quartz watch but I assume (or at least hope) that eventually it will grab a signal. I have other radio controlled clocks and they can be a little finicky in receiving the radio signal especially if you live far from Colorado. Because it has not received the "atomic" signal I have downgraded the watch by 1 star. There was some talk of the Federal government defunding WWVB since it is a somewhat obsolete technology but the funds were restored in the last budget. Even if they do shut it down eventually the watch will continue to function as a regular quartz watch though perhaps it is not worth the price (or the bulk - this is not a thin watch) without the radio controlled feature.

Better than his old Rolex in terms of accuracy, reliability and hassle-free use.

My father always relied on his watch. Now approaching 90 years of age with poor eyesight, this watch has provided him with easy to read hour numerals and a date function. More importantly the watch has kept accurate time for 4 years of use, automatically switching between standard & daylight saving time. He has never complained about it and I have never had to readjust it after the initial setup.

Elegant watch

If you are new to La Crosse Technology, or other radio controlled clocks and watches, then following the setup instruction, that comes with the watch, could be a challenge. My watch came with the minute and hour hands needing alignment, the time zone was not preset correctly. I. t took five days for the radio control signal to find a way to my watch’ receiver, and it finally got that “radio tower” icon displayed. So, after a few days of exploring, experimenting, and patient waiting, I grew literally attached to this elegant design time piece. And, I got a good story to tell! "It's not a time piece, it's a conversation piece" (Mad Men)

the radio controlled feature of thiswatch is lost by the imprecise minute hand pointer

Not worth the money, and maybe not worth anything. The minute hand pointer is all over the map as to position, so much so that you can't tell what minute it is indicating. At first I thought I had it figured out by switching the display to seconds, but that wasn't definitive either. Whenever the digital display of seconds reads 00, the minute pointer should be pointing precisely at a minute tick mark, but it doesn't. So, the radio controlled feature of this watch is lost by the imprecise minute hand pointer. Either my particular watch is defective, or there is a design defect at work here. I would not recommend it. For a radio controlled watch, you need 100% digital display. Save your money. I wish I could return mine for a refund. It is an oversized, overpriced piece of junk. Since I can no longer return mine, I threw it in the trash, where it will be in appropriate company.

great watch, failed to adjust this fall

really a great watch. I got it in June. I was disappointed when it failed to "fall back" this fall. I had to change the time zone to get the correct time. Then 3-4 days later, it did adjust, so I had to change the time zone again. Never did the antenna icon on the face disappear indicating loss of signal,,,so I don't don't what the problem was. Also, I downloaded the full manual from the website, but the manual was for a different watch.

Watch review

Actually I was quite surprised when the watch came in a very attractive wooden box! Sometimes this is called going the "extra mile".The watch is a bit more than what more than I expected. Very attractive but the accuracy and the dates features is what I looked for and got it for a decent price. A local store had the Citizen brand and they wanted $ 330 and I was quoted this was discounted! This E. Howard watch is definitely a good buy!

Great watch, but....

It's comfortable to wear and looks great. Needless to say, it keeps perfect time. It's linked to the atomic clock.Only downside is it doesn't have luminous hands or a light to use at night. Nevertheless, it will always keep great time.
