I just built a guinea pig cage with these. I bought the six square set. Each square in the cube is approximately 1.5 inches.

Q: what are the dimensions of the individual cubes

Great product, but you need 30.25 inches of real space to fit the cube’s circular retainers. I had 28.5 inches of real space and bought it on this basis. Luckily I was able to adapt, having bought two stacks to put one above the other. This gave me a couple of spares to cut and adapt to MY space.

I needed more connectors to get more creative with the cubes. When you hear a slight "pop," then it is secured. Otherwise, the panel will come loose. I also use cable ties to add panels to the middle of some of the cubes. They really are terrific. I love the product (despite it's lack of useful instructions).

Q: Are these cubes heavy duty enough for using as Bookshelf

Yes, but when they say 15 pounds per cube they mean it. I weighed my books to be sure I only had 15 pounds, and a little bump knocked the shelf loose. I had to take out all the books and snap it together again. This is cheap and pretty, but not heavy duty.
