Moby Dick

I used to watch this movie all the time on TV as a kid. It’s a great adaptation of the book with direction by John Huston and Ray Bradbury co-writing the script. It’s about obsessing over the battle between man and nature.Moby Dick starts like an adventure tale with Richard Basehart coming into town and signing up with a whaling vessel. Then Gregory Peck shows up as Captain Ahab and the film takes on a theatrical feel as Peck goes on a long monologue about the evils of the white whale Moby Dick. Then he acts like a minister as he gives a sermon to inspire his men to hunt down this great beast and bring it to him. When the whales show up it transforms again into action sequences mixing shots of the actors in boats, miniatures and real shots of whaling. It’s what makes this film so unique.

Written in 1851, Herman Melville's difficult, tormented novel has inspired a long stream of American creative effort. Among the most recent of these efforts is the opera "Moby-Dick" by Jake Heggie with libretto by Gene Scheer that I saw and reviewed here on Amazon in an outstanding DVD by the San Francisco Opera. The new opera prompted me to visit an earlier famous adaptation of "Moby-Dick" : director John Huston's film version of 1956. Amazon's "instant video" rental feature made it easy to get to know the film. I also used George Cotkin's study of "Moby-Dick" in American culture, "Dive Deeper: Journeys with Moby-Dick" (2012) to supplement watching the movie.John Huston (1906 -- 1987) was a flamboyant American film director and screenwriter who directed many classic films beginning with 1941's "The Maltese Falcon". Although he had difficulty reading the book, Huston had long wanted to make a movie of "Moby-Dick", and he enlisted the science fiction writer Ray Bradbury to write the script. Bradbury too had experienced difficulty reading Melville's novel, but he took to the project enthusiastically. He and Huston had a stormy relationship with each other, but both immersed themselves in the book and the project. As George Cotkin tells it in "Dive Deeper", Bradbury struggled with the script but ultimately had an epiphany, proclaiming "I am Herman Melville" when he realized that Ahab in the book "wants the mens' souls" as well as revenge against the white whale. For Huston's part, Cotkin describes him as "devoted to making his film and having it touched with blasphemy, veracity, and cinematic splendor". Huston revised Bradbury's script. According to Cotkin, " Huston had wanted Bradbury's soul. He managed to get a good film script that he reworked until it fit his own vision of a man bent on diving deeper, confronting a God who had questions to answer."Huston's film captures the "blasphemy" he sought as his Ahab rails against the suffering and lost dreams of human life and against the God he holds responsible. Bradbury's script too shows a charismatic Ahab who has the power to convince his crew of the importance of his vendetta against the whale and to persuade them to follow him. Bradbury's script has a great deal of the majestic, raving quality of Melville. Although the film departs from the novel in several important ways, partly to take account of the different nature of the mediums, it captures a great deal of the spirit and themes of the original. The movie also succeeds in Huston's goal of providing "cinematic splendor" to the telling of the tale. The film was an expensive spectacular, with unique and effective coloration, scenes of the ocean and the Pequod, and a lush score. The most lavish and famous scene in the movie was the climactic portrayal of the white whale and of Ahab's and his crews doomed pursuit towards the end, as the whale carries Ahab off on his back, with the ocean broiling and the birds flying ominously overhead.There are issues with the acting and casting of the film. Gregory Peck does not have the full visceral passion to capture Ahab. He appears in this film looking somewhat like a well-dressed Abraham Lincoln and his performance is restrained. Late in life, Peck portrayed Father Mapple in another screen version of "Moby-Dick" and he frequently spoke with dissatisfaction about his performance of Ahab in the earlier film. Still, many viewers have got to know Ahab through Peck, and his effort deserves respect.As for the rest of the cast, full-voiced Richard Basehart is a capable Ishmael and the German actor of aristocratic background, Friedrich von Ledebur, overcomes the odd casting to be effective as Queequeg. Leo Genn captures the common sense of Starbuck, but the acting gem of this film is Orson Welles in his performance of Father Mapple, whose sermon sets the stage both for the novel and for the movie. According to Cotkin, Welles took to the role of Father Mapple immediately and extemporized on the sermon during the filming. "That's very good, very good indeed", Huston commented. "But now try it as written in the script."Huston's film, like Melville's novel, failed commercially upon its initial release, but its reputation has continued to grow. Over the years, many people have come to the story and its characters through the portrayals in this movie. Huston's film with its flaws thus has taken on something of a life of its own.Huston's film is worth seeing and enjoying in it own right for what it is. I enjoyed watching the movie as a sort of commentary on the book. It is one of a long series of illustrious examples of how Americans over the years have approached and thought about Melville's literary masterwork.Robin Friedman

Sixty-odd years later it couldn't be made better! Black and white picture suits the mood, the wind and rain, and the felt obligation of the captain - played convincingly by Peck.

There are reasons why Moby Dick hasn't been filmed much, except as retreads such as 'The Perfect Storm' and 'The Old Man and the Sea'. One is that filming on water is notoriously difficult, even the studio tank can give problems. Another is that, having been assigned reading in school, Moby Dick is both familiar to many and often dislike by many. But belay all that.John Huston's 1956 film is a workmanlike production; all the bases are touched, and so is the captain. But whether the various incidents hold together as art is the question. Orson Welles and Gregory Peck give fair performances, one as preacher of the Book of Jonah, in a confused sermon missing the point of the story. Maybe Orson and John had a few during that day's shooting. Mr. Peck manages to smolder and stare wildly, although whether he gives off the sulfur fumes of hell is questionable. Like modern superheroes he manages to suggest much while giving little.His "all visible things are but pasteboard masks" speech is nicely done. Bravo! Peck's Captain Ahab is the solipsist extraordinaire, a man on a mission. What I would like to know is what is behind this pasteboard mask of a movie, and book. Many are the interpretations. A religious tract? A slap at slavery? A proto-environmental epic? A Dostoyevskian dive into the depths of man's and beast's brutality? A vision of things to come? I did notice that Captain Ahab points on his map to Bikini Atoll in the Pacific as the place to find Moby Dick. At the time of filming, Bikini Atoll had recently been the test site in 1952 for the first Hydrogen Bomb test. Is Huston predicting nuclear apocalypse? Melville didn't write about the meaning of his greatest novel, so you are free to choose or roll your own.When the novel came out in 1851, author Herman Melville waited impatiently for the applause and acclaim. It didn't come. The novel sank as surely as a whaling ship. Nothing. It would take until 1917 for the novel to resurface and not till 1926 was it reprinted.Perhaps the film will give you the wind to dive into the book. It's a wonderful book, full of asides and vignettes like a Victorian house, but withal a worthwhile visit to the depths of a man's, and a county's, psyche. In 1923 British novelist D.H.Lawrence proclaimed Melville to be “a futurist long before futurism found paint” and Moby Dick “one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world.” A futuristic novel? Not such a stretch when you consider that two years before Moby Dick's first publication author Melville purchased 'Frankenstein' in a London bookshop. And Cormac McCarthy certainly owes a debt to Moby Dick.Best to say that Herman Melville wrote us a mystery and wants it that way, but let the book speak for me:"Far beneath this wondrous world upon the surface, another and still stranger world met our eyes...for, suspended in those watery vaults, floated the forms of the nursing mothers of the whales, and those that by their enormous girth seemed shortly to be mother. The lake, as I have hinted, was to a considerable depth exceedingly transparent; and as human infants while suckling will calmly and fixedly gaze away from the breast, as if leading two different lives at the time; and while yet drawing mortal nourishment, be still spiritually feasting upon some unearthly reminiscence; -- even so did the young of these whales seem looking up towards us, but not at us, as if we were but a bit of Gulfweed in their new-born sight."Does the 1956 Huston film deliver this strange world below the surface? At times. It tries. But for the most part it delivers the plot of the book--not an inconsiderable thing mind you. Perhaps if it was filmed again in the age of CGI, we might get more mystery and the whale's point-of-view. But in 1956, in hands other than John Huston's, it could have been much worse.

Great movie with a all star cast. Fabulous adaptation of the old classic novel by Melville.

Gemeinsam mit seinem bevorzugten Kameramann, dem Briten Oswald Morris, ging Regisseur John Huston Wagnisse mit dem Technicolor Verfahren ein - diese ganz innovativen, experimentellen Wege holten somit noch mehr aus den brillainten, strahlend leuchtenden Farben heraus. So fotografierte der Brite "Moulin Rouge" durch Rauch und buntes Licht, so dass der Film tatsächlich an die Farbigkeit der Plakate des Malers Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec erinnerte.Einen Schritt weiter gingen die beiden dann bei "Moby Dick", der Romanverfilmung von Herman Melville: Der Film wurde so entwickelt, dass seine Bilder an alte, ausgewaschene Kupferstiche des 19. Jahrhunderts erinnerten. Dieser genialen Kameraarbeit ist es zu verdanken, dass der Film von 1956 auch heute noch atmosphärisch und spannend wirkt, also auch heute noch den Zuschauer zu packen weiß. Diese Kameraarbeit ist schon am Anfang bestens zu erkennen. Um diese ausgeblichenen Pastelltöne der Kupferstiche zu hinzubekommen, entzog Morris dem Film im Entwicklungsprozess die Farbigkeit durch Matrizen in Schwarz-Weiß und eine zusätzliche Silberlegierung.Nach zahlreichen Oscarnomnierungen und diversen britischen Filmpreisen als bester Kameramann (Ein Haufen toller Hunde, Der Spion, der aus der Kälte kam, Oliver) bekam er dann 1971 für "Anatevka" den wohlverdienten Oscar.Die Handlung beginnt im Jahr 1841 in New Bedford, Neuengland. Dorthin verschlägt es den jungen Erzähler der Geschichte. Dieser Ismael (Richard Basehart) ist auf der Suche nach Arbeit und sein Ziel ist es in der Hafenstadt als Matrose anzuheuern. Besonders am Walfang ist er interessiert, denn dort soll man schnell Arbeit bekommen. Das Öl der Meeresriesen ist begehrt und viele Schiffe haben sich auf den Walfang spezialisiert. Ein weiterer Grund für seinen Wunsch auf See zu fahren ist, dass das Meer ihn schon immer irgendwie magisch angezogen hat. In einer Kneipe lernt er andere Matrosen (u.a. Harry Andrews) kennen, die ihn - obwohl er kein Einheimischer ist - sehr schnell in ihren Reihen aufnehmen. Er bezieht dort ein Zimmer und soll es mit dem polynesischen Eingeborenen Queequeq (Friedrich von Ledebur), also einem Ungläubigen teilen, der im Verdacht steht Kannibale zu sein. Dies ist dann der Beginn einer guten Freundschaft und am Tage darauf heuern beide auf dem Walfangschiff "Pequod" an. Nach dem Gottesdienst und einer eindringlichen Predigt von Pfarrer Mapple (Orson Welles) treffen die beiden einen sonderbaren Mann (Royal Dano) am Hafen, der sich Elijah nennt und den beiden weissagt, dass Ahab (Gregory Peck), der Kapitän verdammt sei und von einem weißen Wal getötet wird, er wird wieder auferstehen von der Tiefe und alle - bis auf einen - mit in den Tod reißen.Tatsächlich stellt sich schnell heraus, dass Kapitän Ahab, der im Kampf mit einem weißen Wal sein Bein verlor und seitdem eine Beinprothese trägt, die aus den Kieferknochen eines Pottwals hergestellt wurde, tatsächlich eine sehr persönliche Mission mit dem Walfang verbindet. Er will sich an dem Wal rächen. Doch Ahab geniesst das Vertrauen der Männer und hat die Gabe die Mannschaft auf seine Mission einzuschwören. Selbst der vernünftige Maat Starbuck (Leo Genn) , der als einziger die paranoiden Anteile erkennt und für gefährlich hält, kann nicht mit der Unterstützung der Mannschaft rechnen. Als Ahab die Bergung erlegter Wale stoppen lässt, weil Moby Dick, der weiße Wal, sich in der Nähe aufhalten soll und später der "Rachel" einem anderen Walfänger keine Hilfe leistet, um deren Schiffbrüchige zu suchen, ist immer mehr die Katastrophe sichtbar, auf die der rachsüchtige Kapitän zusteuert...Der Film wurde ein großer Kinoerfolg, erntete aber wegen Hauptdarsteller auch kritische Stimmen, denn er wurde in der zeitgenössischen Kritik als Fehlbesetzung angesehen, obwohl er den Ahab sehr intensiv und glaubwürdig spielt. Es war vor allem deshalb, weil Gregory Peck auf ein bestimmtes Rollenimage festgelegt war und man sich ihn nicht so sehr als finsterer und düsterer Bösewicht vorstellen konnte. Ich finde die Kritik unberechtigt, denn Peck ist ein grandioser Ahab. Huston selbst hätte sich vielleicht eher seinen Vater Walter Huston für die Rolle gewünscht und viele Kinogänger meinten, dass Orson Welles, der den imposanten Pfarrer spielt, besser in der Ahab Rolle gewesen wäre, weil Pecks Gesicht zu gütig und zu jung erschien. Aber wenn man ganz objektiv Pecks Darstellung betrachtet, dann ist er als einbeiniger Rächer großartig und beherrscht jede Szene. Natürlich wird er von Huston auch mit tollen Szenen versorgt. Er wirkt charismatisch, innerlich zerrissen, getrieben von destruktiven Mächten und kann die Besessenheit dieses Mannes glaubwürdig verkörpern.Darüberhinaus sind auch die guten Darstellungen von Leo Genn, Richard Basehart und des Österreichers Friedrich von Ledebur erwähenswert. Nicht zu vergessen der markante Kurzauftritt von Orson Welles. "Moby Dick" ist auch heute noch ein mitreissender Abenteuerfilm mit Tiefgang. Er zeigt den Walfang mit den Augen der Menschen von damals, aber der Zuschauer von Heute erkennt darin durch die Jagd auf diese imposanten Geschöpfe, den ganzen menschlichen Wahnsinn, der hinter der Jagd steckt. Für den weißen Wal wurden insgesamt drei mehr als dreißig Meter lange Attrappen angefertigt, die aus Stahlskeletten mit Kunststoffhaut bestanden. Eine Attrappe ging unter, bei einer zweiten rissen die Schleppleinen, weshalb für geraume Zeit nach dem Verlust davon die Rede war, ein weißer Geisterwal treibe im Atlantik herum.

Diesen Film " MOBY DICK " habe ich 1956 im Atrium Kino in Einbeck ( besteht heute nicht mehr ) als achtjähriger Junge und war sofort begeistert vom Walfang und doch gleichzeitig gesckockt wie ein Kapitän seine Mannschaft mit in den Tod nimmt !!! Mister Starbuck ist der Steuermann, der es wagt den Kapitän AHAB für einen Moment Zeit umzustimmen, der Rache abzuschwören. Jedoch die Verletzlichkeit der Seele ist zu groß bei AHAB, er muß um seinen Seelenfrieden wiederzufinden, sich am dem weißen Wal rächen der ihn zum Krüppel gebissen hat, selbst dann noch wenn der Wal sich in die Hölle flüchten würde !!!Wer diesen Film und das Buch nicht kennt, dem fehlt eine sehr tiefgreifende Erkenntnis des menschlichen Seins. Deises ist mein Film den ich immer wieder ansehen kann und muss !!!Wer jedoch Hermann Meville richtig verstehen will, was mit der Jagd nach dem weißen Wal gemeint ist, der muß auch das Buch : EVANGELINE lesen ! - Die überlebt haben auf hoher See ! -Dieser Film ist mein absoluter Lieblings-Film und besonders sehenswert !!!Der Film beginnt mit einer Wanderung an das Meer von ISHMAEL, der Name bedeutet übersetzt : Gott hört ! Aber wir erfahren in der Geschichte von Kapitän AHAB und der Jagd nach dem weißen Wal, dass Gott nichts hört, die Notrufe derer, die bei der Jagd nach dem Wal absaufen, d. h. Tod durch ertrinken erleiden.- Das Buch : EVANGELINE gibt in diesem Zusammenhang noch Antworten aus dem Geschehen : auf hoher See ! Wer der Rache nicht abschwört ist dem Tod geweiht, hier gemeint AHAB, der mit dem Objekt seiner Rache untergeht, das ist der Preis der für Rache nehmen gezahlt werden muß. Aber es geht auch darum, überleben zu wollen und wie dieses möglich ist oder auch nicht! Herman Melville wählte Namen aus der Bibel für seinen Roman " MOBY DICK " Elias der Verkünder, Ahab dessen Blut die Hunde aufleckten, Ismael, der sich auf dem Sarg seines Freundes Queequeg klammert um uns die Geschichte des Untergangs zu verkuenden! - Ishmael steht für, Gott hört - Elias für Verkündung ! - Aus Bibel : Jonas Berufung und Flucht vor Gott : Vers 15, ... und sie nahmen Jonas und warfen ihn ins Meer. Da wurde das Meer still ... ! - aus dem Buch der Könige : 1. Vers 29 Reich Israel : AHAB, der Sohn Omris, König über Israel ... ! 1. Könige : 22 Ahabs Untergang - 38 : .... leckten die Hunde sein Blut ! Dieses gehört zum Untergang des Kapitän AHAB mit seiner Mannschaft ! - Die mir vorliegende DVD habe ich meiner Sammlung zugeführt um mir den Bestand für die Zukunft zu sichern. - Das Meer war still und Ishmael schwamm auf ruhiger See, hielt sich am Sarg fest !- MOBY DICK ist eine Geschichte der Rache und des Fluches die immer wieder neue Botschaften entdecken lässt ! -

Moby Dick - well the story is great, the acting especially by Gregory Peck is great and the length of the films time is probably correct- the only fault I find is with the colour which appears to be faded. This is a new dvd and not a new film and I believe more could have been done to keep the colour- which was better than this when first seen in the movies decades ago.- Therefore the fault has to be with the dvd, the special effects are as they were in the 1950's which were very good then but lacking in comparison to todays standards. Which brings me neatly into comparison with the latest effort featuring Patrick Stewart - which given the advancements in technology SHOULD have been a superior movie - it isn't. It lacks the acting punch and quality of acting that this the former movie has Greg Peck plays a convincing 'Ahab' I'm afraid to me Patrick Stewart seems to strain to fill the lead part as do most of the actors in their roles- except for - Gregory Peck yet again who has the cameo role of Father Mapple and steals the acting plaudits with a most effective sermon this role was (in my own humble opinion) better acted and delivered by Peck than was the original (This movie) by Orson Welles. In conclusion this Moby Dick Movie directed by John Huston is the better Moby Dick version. The colour I know was originally conceived for realism as a whaling community however this DVD does not live up to that and may irritate. Having said all prior I still recommend this version as a very good film which your entire family will enjoy and will be the best option for quite some time yet I presume.

The movie is great, imo the best Moby Dick version, and Peck will always be the best Ahab to me.With that outta the way, let's get technical:To my knowledge there are two versions in existence. The MGM one, which is 4:3 aspect ratio and more colourful (taken from the film negatives). But slightly blurry.And the Kino Lorber's 2015 version which comes in the original 1.66:1 aspect ratio and tries to simulate the special colouring technique that was used for the original physical film copies, subduing the colours to greyish sepia. Also sports a slightly sharper looking image. This is currently the closest we get to the original director's vision and the intended look of the movie.See comparison images attached to this review, to get a better idea of the differences.The version available via amazon's PrimeVideo is the Kino Lorber's 2015 one.If you want the more colourful but less visionary MGM version, look for the 2002 DVD.I (currently) do not own any BD releases of this movie, so I can't tell you which version you'll find on those.Personally, I like both versions. The sepia look gives the entire movie a very unique feeling, while the colourful version let's you enjoy, well, the colors. Which one you want to buy comes down to taste, or respect for the original vision.
