This is a great book, the photos are interesting and I like that Stephan shore taking the picture as a random visitor leaving the scene unchangedThe paper quality the color are great . The size of the book is optimal , I wish many photographers could print in that size

Leider war ich von Stephen Shores "American Surfaces" etwas enttäuscht, da ich mir mehr Fotos im Stil des Coverfotos erhofft hatte. Es gibt zwar schon noch einige derartige Bilder, aber viele Fotos sind seltsam/belanglos (z.B. Spiegelei auf Teller), eklig (z. B. verdreckter Kühlschrank) oder auch verstörend (z. B. Leiche). Es gibt auch keine Bildunterschriften, sondern man erfährt lediglich die Stadt und das Jahr, in dem das Foto aufgenommen wurde.Ein anderer Minuspunkt ist, dass die Aufnahmen im Buch nur Postkartengröße haben. Ich hatte mir einen Bildband mit großformatigen Bildern im Stil von "American Graffiti" erhofft. Daher empfehle ich, das Buch im Geschäft durchzublättern, bevor man so viel Geld für Shores Fotografien ausgibt. Gedruckt wurden die "American Surfaces" übrigens in China.Das sind die negativen Aspekte - was nicht heißt, dass es nicht auch zahlreiche tolle und beeindruckende Fotos in dem Bildband gibt.

Tornar extraordinário o banal e reconhecer-lhe a sua beleza estética e poética: auto-estradas, ruas e parques de estacionamento, hotéis, restaurantes e lojas que vendem coisas normais. American Surfaces é uma "road trip" em forma de fotografia, absolutamente marcante da década de 70.

It is always a perilous exercise to reissue a classic especially when one decides to expand it, fortunately both this expansion and the new essay complement each other. The physical book is well is of a good size, the printing is decent and the sequence is strange in a good way. This is definitely a slow burn so I shall get back to it often.

If you haven’t seen any of Stephens Shores work then you are in for a treat. This book is a fantastic collection of photography which form a fascinating time capsule showing candid views of American life over the decades.
