OTC (8342) Brake Hub Resurfacing Kit

I ordered this tool to do a brake job on my daughter-in-law's car. It is a great product and would have made the job a lot easier, but Amazon missed the scheduled delivery date by several days. I had to do the work this tool was bought for by hand with sand paper and a wire brush. Lesson learned, you can't rely on the promised delivery date. So I'll have it for the next brake job. Disappointed I didn't get is in time though. I'd mark it down but that isn't really fair to the product, which is as advertised.

Automotive brake servicing. Real time saver. Gets in and around studs as well as cleaning rotor face and drum center hole. Insert a used stud in the drum and clean around the stud hole mounting face. Same method to resurface corroded alloy rim face before recoating.

I used this kit to clean one of my back hubs on my truck. It works, but honestly I think I like using a wire brush in my drill much better. The head on this kit just doesn't fit between the lug and the center of my hub, making that space impossible to clean. Even though the brush goes over the lug, the circle isn't wide enough to go all the way to the center of the hub. It's too wide, however, to fit between the lug and the center of the hub, so I can't use this to clean that area.It does what it's supposed to do otherwise, so I think 4/5 stars is fair, but even though I bought the kit I ended up using a wire brush on the other side because it was so much easier and just as effective.

This tool has enough clearance to handle a 1/2inch stud approximately an 1 1/2 to 2 inches long. The 1.6 inch diameter abrasive pads are securely held in place by a threaded twist lock system. The tool has a shaft diameter that fits into a pneumatic die grinder but I used a 3/8 corded hand drill.Using the tool was straight forward and easy when its slipped on over a stud. When using it between the studs its a bit wobbly to use and requires a bit of technique to hold it steady. In this situation I found that holding the pad at a very slight angle to the surface allowed me to polish the surface between the studs.Because of the rotor design on the CR-V and the pad diameter of the tool I was not able to get to a tiny area between the stud and the center part of the rotor. The kit only supplies one size of abrasive and having a slightly larger diameter option supplied in the kit would have been perfect. Overall the tool got about 95% of the job done and I only had to detail small bits with a wire brush and emery paper .

Didnt work out for my rear hubs on my ‘06 Tacoma. The tool was too large to fit around the stud and get down the the flange surface. Did not attempt the fronts. Returned and used a 3” wire wheel in a 1/4” die grinder. Seemed like a nice tool, but a little to expensive to keep if it cant work for the vehicle I purchased it for.

This little tool does a great job cleaning rust and corrosion from those difficult to access spots behind the wheel studs. It allows the rotor to sit flat and minimizes the chances of warpage or excessive runout due to a contaminated surface.The disks last for a good amount of time as long as you don't spin them terribly fast (like with a die grinder)and the tool is durable for a little piece of plastic. I would recommend this tool over the velcro style ones as the twist on heads are more reliable. All in all, I love this little tool!!

I do a lot of brake jobs, and this tool is invaluable to not only clean hub surface around the studs, I also use it in other hard to reach areas, such as inside hat of the rotor prior to machining. The setup is easy and straight forward. The disks seem to last a good amount of time. I use it on my 90 degree air grinder.

Worked perfect for cleaning the vane posts and surface in a Garrett turbo. They aren’t cheap, but they seem to last quite a while.
