The PERFECT EDC Knife (until the Delica 5 arrives some day)

If you don't want to waste time reading, JUST BUY IT NOW, you won't regret it! I purchased the gray handled Delica 4 because frankly it was the cheapest handle color at the time I was looking. I do like how the gray color is a little more low-profile than the green or orange handles though. My new Delica 4 has replaced the Para 3 and several other more expensive knives in my EDC rotation.... the Delica 4 is the only knife I've carried for the last couple months. I take it everywhere, literally... even around the house. It is perfect... light weight, durable, tough, easy to open/close one handed and the VG10 blade steel is pretty solid from what I've seen so far (and it arrived pretty sharp). This thing is so light that I often forget I have it on me - it easily fits into all jeans pockets and I enjoy carrying mine in my watch pocket on the right side of my jeans. Mesh shorts or a pocket t-shirt are also great for carrying this - it really is the ideal size and perfect weight. The grip/handle easily fills my hand (I have medium-large hands) but the blade is not so big that people freak out if you have to take it out to use it, like perhaps with the much larger Endura. My wife even borrowed it to carry and she said she likes it a lot more than her SOG Aegis tanto, which is also very light weight. So, I went ahead and ordered her the purple handled Delica 4 as an early Christmas gift and she loves it! If you're on the fence about this Delica 4, I suggest you go ahead and try it. You won't be disappointed! And if you are disappointed, buy through Amazon and they'll let you return it within 30 days (their customer service is great like that). I've been searching for the perfect EDC knife for years now, but the search is finally over now that I found my gray Delica 4. Only problem is now I also want the green handled ZDP-189 version, the all black half serrated version... I'll probably end up owning each color within a year or two haha! Seriously, it's an awesome EDC knife... just buy it. In a future Delica 5 version, I wouldn't mind seeing SPYDERCO add a compression lock, a G10 grip option (like they used to have with the D4!) and perhaps a better, more premium steel like CTS-XHP or S30V. And SPYDERCO, please offer an all-black DLC-coated blade option that is entirely smooth edge instead of just half serrated!

A Slice of Knife History

I had heard about the Delica for years and finally decided to try it. The Delica helped start the Spyderco phenomenon in 1990 and I wanted a piece of knife history. Anything that has remained a top-seller for 26 years has to be special, plus it is now in its 4th evolution (part of Spyderco's Constant Quality Improvement (CQI), whereby they continue to tweak the ergonomics, blade style, and blade steel to keep things fresh). On a whim, I opted for the Japanese, hand-tinted, Zome handles, just to make it a conversation piece. The knife has been my constant companion since it arrived. It is light, comfortable, and constantly useful (opening packages, breaking down cardboard, cutting down weeds, slicing irrigation flex-pipe, etc.). It is big enough to handle most serious tasks without being overly bulky or causing concern to none-knife-people. The continuous belly and full-flat grind make it an effective slicer. The slight drop-point at the very end of the blade strengthens the tip considerably. The VG-10 steel is a nice balance between durability and easy sharpening. The larger Spydie hole makes for easy opening (though the edges are sharp). And the lock-back mechanism appears to be the strongest of the Spyderco lineup, according to controlled tests viewable on YouTube. Some have complained about the lack of a finger choil, but you can still choke up on the blade without cutting yourself. The Zome handles (on *my* knife, at least) are a bit "murky" - essentially a muddy black-and-green camouflage that would be difficult to see if dropped in the woods. The pocket-clip is only painted, not parkerized, and wearing quickly. I'd also prefer a deeper carry to protect against getting snagged and pulled out when walking through brush. But I have to say, the knife is very easy on the hand, so this is just nitpicking. If I were in a wilderness survival situation, I would want a different knife, but for rural, around-the-property EDC, the Delica 4 seems a near-perfect choice.

Still Popular for a Reason

This knife is still a popular choice for a reason. It's simple, constructed well, affordable, razor sharp, and the blade came in centered. The overall design of the knife makes it a fantastic slicer, and it fits wonderfully in the hand. Its grippy handle means that you'll have a hard time putting it down, let alone having to worry about it slipping from your hand. The locking mechanism is strong and sturdy, yet easy to close one handed. The cut out hole in the blade, or spider hole as I've heard it called, assists in deploying the blade fast. Overall, this knife is one that I never leave home without it.

The perfect in pocket knife.

I bought this to be an in pocket knife (without a pocket clip) and I absolutely love it. It is lighter than the traditional knives that I have been carrying while also having good blade length and a back lock that can be used with one hand. The texture is a bit aggressive but when carried inside of your pocket that means that it does not move around which is a huge plus. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a simple, minimalist knife that can easily handle all normal EDC tasks.
