What is JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and how can you put it to work? This concise guide helps busy IT professionals get up and running quickly with this popular data interchange format, and provides a deep understanding of how JSON works. Author Lindsay Bassett begins with an overview of JSON syntax, data types, formatting, and security concerns before exploring the many ways you can apply JSON today. From Web APIs and server-side language libraries to NoSQL databases and client-side frameworks, JSON has emerged as a viable alternative to XML for exchanging data between different platforms. If you have some programming experience and understand HTML and JavaScript, this is your book. Learn why JSON syntax represents data in name-value pairs Explore JSON data types, including object, string, number, and array Find out how you can combat common security concerns Learn how the JSON schema verifies that data is formatted correctly Examine the relationship between browsers, web APIs, and JSON Understand how web servers can both request and create data Discover how jQuery and other client-side frameworks use JSON Learn why the CouchDB NoSQL database uses JSON to store data Review: Very clear and fast to read JSON book, especially for beginners - Even if you know nothing about programming you will understand this book. It is extremely clear. It is an excellent book to begin learning JSON, JSON Schema, and beginning JSON security vulnerabilities and what to do about them. It was written in 2015 and therefore is more up-to-date than other books. It touches on other related technologies like AngularJS, Node, etc. JSON doesn't care about what language you write in - PHP, ASP.NET, HTML, etc. This book gives plain English examples, then progresses to simple JSON coding. It does not give a lot of extra examples to work through, but does show what to watch out for, and references to other resources. You can read this book in a day or two, perhaps in a few hours. It's only 112 pages including the index. If you want to know if what you are crafting is good JSON data, but don't need to understand the in-depth programming of JSON, then this is an especially good book. If you are a total beginner to programming, or don't know a lot of programming lingo, then this is a great book. If you already know some JSON, this book is NOT for you, go buy a different book. Review: Koo😎 book - slim book - all focued on json. Syntax, security concerns, applications. Kool😎 book i guess

Great, concise, introduction to JSON
This is exactly what I was looking for. A concise but fairly thorough treatment of JSON. I'm a (primarily) SQL developer but my organization is considering moving some of their data into Mongo. For me this was perfect; enough information to be able to do intelligent research.

Excellent book for JSON
Recommend the book to developers who are involved in integrating data across multiple systems. Good set of references for references.

An average book
There's nothing wrong with the book except that there are so many long and (in my opinion) boring "real world" analogies about everything from seagulls to kitchens compared to what I want to pay for. The book could probably have been cut in half and nothing important would have been lost. Or rather, I would have liked the same length, but many more concrete and practical examples and more detail. The explanations aren't always that great either compared to other O'Reilly books (and I own a lot of them). They're not bad - but absolutely not great.

I love the way Lindsay used Metaphor and Simile to explain ...
I love the way Lindsay used Metaphor and Simile to explain the constructs of JSON, and the detailed examples of its use with other technologies. Excellent book!

but short and sweet. It gets right to the point
Not a think book, but short and sweet. It gets right to the point. I bought it for a quick explanation of JSON and it succeeded in that.

Aveiro, Portugal. Data analysis solutions in a big hospital Clear text, with well structured examples. I learned to use JSON in a practical solution, in a robotization project to deliver data to doctors. Sometimes the book is of different levels, for those who use it.

having a writing style that is very engaging and easy to read
This book is really well written, having a writing style that is very engaging and easy to read. The format presented allows the reader to easily understand the knowledge being conveyed through analogy and metaphor that can be easily understood by anyone. The book does exactly as it promises, focusing on data interchange as a concept and how JSON fits in to the bigger information systems picture as at the time of its publication. The book does not waste your time with historical cruft, or, speculation as to future trend, but does however, provide links to reference that does detail these aspects if you feel the need to explore. Each chapter has a clear set of goals for the reader and achieves them brilliantly enabling the reader to gain clear understanding at each stage. The book was easy to hold whilst reading not having too many pages and can be thoroughly read in a day, and after reading you will understand fully what JSON is, where it fits in the information systems architecture, and how you can apply it to your projects.

A good simple book - its title says it all.
JSON is becoming all-pervasive and this book is enough to understand how it works (and why to avoid it like the plague).
