Review: Vital Foundation - I have just entered the world of .net and object orientated programming. Many books I have started looking at do not properly explain object orientated fundamentals, and seem to assume you understand them. This book carefully & comprehensively explains all aspects, and has tons of examples. All examples are written as console apps - this works very effectively since it removes the distractions of the IDE and focuses on core & essential object orientated concepts. Review: The Book - I found the book is useful as a point of reference only. It is not an easy read. But the information is in there somewhere if you can find it.

The Book
I found the book is useful as a point of reference only. It is not an easy read. But the information is in there somewhere if you can find it.

Book for newbies
The language used is clear and simple but so is the ability of the reader that this book is aimed at. If you've programmed before then choose a more technical book. This covers the syntax and structure of the language but the examples given are too abstract to be really informative and the best thing about vb.net (its Object Orientated capabilities) are just not covered in enough depth. Theres also no coverage of database access and as most vb apps Ive seen and written have a database somewhere behind them thats a very important omission. A good book on .net and a decent book on OOP and the help in VS.net will take you alot further than this book. Disapointing from O'Riley.

Shipping and delivery time were no issue. As for the contents of the book, these guys make many books for all languages and they are the gold standard. Obviously Visual Basic is not common but if you need to learn, this is the book.

Over the past decade I have been required to complete small amounts of code writing in VB6 and Python to augment my engineering work. In my opinion VB6 and Python coding can be successfully completed with little or no understanding of Object Oriented Programming (OOP). However this is much less true of VB.NET which I consider to be one of its great attributes as it forces you to fully embrace OOP and in doing so elevates your code to a new level of clarity and efficiency. I would like to thoroughly recommend this little book due to its well chosen words and examples that helped me to become more proficient at OOP in VB.NET.

I bought this for my son to read over the summer in preparation for a class heโs taking next semester. He said he was satisfied with the book and has a good understanding of the material.

Really enjoyed reading this booked. I've messed around with programming for awhile, but this book really helped me understand class based programming. Great book, really well structured.
