Who is the romance between?

Is the romance between Olivia and Fred, or the author and unions? I pretty much had to force myself to finish the book. I’ve read other books by this author that were pretty good, but this series wasn’t. She really lost her perspective and pushed the union good / company bad mantra. Lets just say the romance story totally got lost, (but she tries to catch it all up in the last few pages after chapter after chapter after chapter of union this strike that) unless the romance was really between Miller and unions.

sad, yet very good

The Pullman strike was devastating to those struck because of the lack of support from other unions. People were starving, yet Pullman and his board decreased wages and kept prices for rent the same and charged more for food. This story has very much information about the Pullman strike, but it is a love story. This occurred during a depression that was occurring in 1894. This book, the third of a trilogy, begins with the day that the people from Pullman strike. I wanted to know what happened with the strike, so I looked up the information from two sources. I had become extremely involved in what I was reading. While I support right to work laws, I can definitely understand the need for unions. They were extremely needed during the Industrial Revolution, yet they did not come into effect for several years after it began, and then it took a while before they started working together.Olivia came from England and was able to become an assistant chef at the hotel at Pullman. She fell in love with a young man named Fred. Her friend and former employer, Charlotte, who had been in an aristocratic lady in England falls in love with a reporter. Charlotte had gone back to England and lost her father and her home due to her father's gambling. She had a child out of wedlock in America, and her parents had taken him back to England with them after she had abandoned him with Olivia in the United States. She had gone to England, where she thought she might stay, but realized she had to return to the US in order to have a decent life. Fred's mother, Martha, goes to work at the hotel kitchen as a baker and she and Chef Renè, the French head chef, fall in love. That is the background for a story that is gripping, joyful, sad, and hopeful all at the same time!If you want to read this book, I strongly suggest you get the first two of the trilogy before reading this one. You will probably become as involved in the story as did I.

'An Uncertain Dream' in 1884 - (Postcard From Pullman) Series. Book # 3

In Pullman, Illinois everyone worked for Pullman Car Company the salaries were low and the rent on the houses went up. They had to buy everything from the company store which was outrageously over priced. Olivia was torn between love for Fred DeVault and loyalty to the company. Charlotte gets her baby back and she is in Chicago working and trying to raise a baby. In 1884 the people got together and decided to go on a Strike! This was to increase wages and lower rent the whole town got involved. After meetings and more meetings this brings the town together, some of the people found other jobs in Chicago and others went back to work so they would not have to move and start all over again. This brings the series to an end, it was a good series but no surprises, The author did describe the trains in detail, the town, the characters were well described and the series were entertaining.

,,2/3 thru I almost stopped reading as it got BORING then finally last 1/3got interesting again.

The first two books were better than this one in my opinion. Good storyline, good characters and just what you want in a Christian Love drama novel. This is the story ofhow English Royalty (just a bit) works, and what happens when a person really cannotuse it to her advantage & has to be what they would consider a commoner. That is justthe one main character,Charlotte. The other is a assistant chef hired under a falsely written recommendation,Olivia. You follow each one thru the 3 books & how their livesmove & where they are. You also follow a strike in the Pullman Railroad Cars & how thiseffects so many people. I know it was an important part of the story but I think the author could have shortened some of that. Thinking over it I think that is what dragged the 3books out.

Olivia Mott, Charlotte Spencer, and Hazel DeVault are Women (Book Characters) to Admire

I started reading this series with Book 1 and ended with Book 3, but wished there was another to show the time period in Chicago (1895 - 1910). The author (Judith Miller) took a historical time period in the 1890's of industrial development and created a series of books that could bring to life a by-gone era. I learned so much history associated with Pullman the town and the man behind it's creation.I recommend this series to anyone interested in the history of post Civil War township developments. This series made the area come to life and caused me to do research for Pullman, Illinois. I think this would be a great Girl's Trip for my next "mom, sister, and daughter trip." Strong women of faith with human characteristics encourage our hearts.

Very disappointed in the end

I loved the 1st book and parts of the 2nd book, and had already purchased the 3rd book, which was a completedisappointment. I too grew tired of hearing about the strike in Pullman, and wanted a lot more interactionbetween Fred and Olivia, as well as Charlotte and Matthew. (which by the way, we didn't find out how thatrelationship progressed and/or ended). I love historical christian romance novels, but you needed to continuethe series so we could find out how things ended/progressed with each of these couples. I have read some ofyour other novels, and was impressed, but this one just wasn't enjoyable. I could hardly wait for it to end, which I hate to admit, but that was the way I felt.

Uncertain dream

I was a little bit disappointed with this book I have read the first book in the Pullman series and it was so good I couldn't wait to get started on this one but I found this was a very long story with very little happening it could have been so much better

Nice but long

This book must be read together with the previous two off the series, to understand its setting. not my kind of story though, as for me there's to much detail about the strike history etc, and as a foreigner it means little to me.

Captivating

Judith Miller writes in a captivating style. Her characters have interesting and believable personalities. The characters stories are woven together in a way that interesting. This book was a delightful read.
