Impressive instrument
I purchased this meter on the advise of my wood pellet supplier as a possible means to measure the relative heat produced by various pellet brands. On checking it against my counter top room thermometers, I found that in many cases it read 2 to 4 degrees lower but I feel that this is normal as it is measuring emitted IR from a nearby surface not air temperature. Pointing it inside my refrigerator and oven appeared to give much more accurate results. Two very useful features are non-contact instant readings and automatic averaging displayed separately. A thermocouple probe is included which can be used for contact or air measurements. The thermocouple readings closely matched my room and digital meat thermometers. The meter did accurately measure the temperature of the pellet stove case but I found that moving a flat black object slowly passed the air ports, holding the meter spot on this, then reading the average result gave me a fairly accurate reading of the output air temperature. By burning a measured amount of pellets and taking the average of several timed samples, I found that six brands of locally available pellets varied over a range of 7.5% in heat output. A few percent can make a large difference in cost when burning 4 - 5 tons over a season. I feel my meter has paid for itself and I have only begun to investigate it's capabilities.Note: Yes, I could have used a meat thermometer but I would have had to fabricate a mount, could only measure one port, and they update much slower.

Product does not match listed specifications.
I recently purchased a Pyle PIRT30 wide range thermometer and am most disappointed in the unit. I feel that the company misrepresents the specifications. The listed specifications are -58oF to 1022oF determined by infrared, and -58 oF to 1999 oF using the type K thermocouple. Although these are the listed specifications, the unit only ships with a thermocouple with a maximum temperature of 482 oF. I purchased the unit for high temperature applications. When I contacted the company about where I might purchase a high temperature thermocouple they responded“We don’t offer anything higher. Other companies do offer high temperature thermocouples (for their own products). However, there is no way of knowing if these are compatible with the PIRT30 input ports, and whether they would produce accurate results with the PIRT30 unit. Pyle might just as well say the unit is good up to 10,000F because there is no way to use the unit for any temperature above 1022F.I intend to return the unit.

Use this thing all the time around the metal working ...
Use this thing all the time around the metal working shop. Makes me feel a lot safer being able to check if a work piece is too hot to touch after grinding or heating it up with a torch. Absolutely worth what it cost, and built to last. Would give 5 starts if it could read temperatures even higher, but for those who don't do any blacksmithing this shouldn't be a problem.

I found the limit... and was dissapointed
Not many people have the ability to see its high limit. But my metal foundry does. This is good for novelty purposes, even for cooking. But the highest temp I saw before I hit the limitation of the machine was about 1200, and I needed to be able to reach 2000+ so I could monitor the cast iron. For a serious project like mine I have to rebuy something better. Still it does record temps in the hundreds so it can be used for safety.for house-hold use this is fine; doing bigger projects look elsewhere.

Clarifying The Specs
For anyone new to IR thermometers, it's important to clarify part of the description. First, the IR technology used in this and other devices is capable of measuring temperatures up to around 1000ºF / 500ºC. The "High Temperature" portion of the product name comes from a second measurement technology known as "Type K Input." This is a thermocouple probe (aka thermometer) on a wire that plugs into the handle of the device. Some of these are capable of measuring temperatures up to that advertised in the description, but you'll have to buy one separately.

Works pretty great
I got this unit because it has a backlight button for dark-of-night diagnostics. Seems to work as expected under normal ambient temperatures, however in deep winter readings are very inaccurate. Includes a long hi-temp sensor you can insert inside your machine's innards, pretty great feature. One thing to know, by default it comes set to celsius. Look for a secret switch hidden inside the battery holder to set to fahrenheit.

Nice!
Best price on a high temp unit I found which I will use mostly for blacksmithing. Good quality too. Instructions are iffy. Mine you just push the buttons to change from C to F or K measurements. I'd like one that goes well above the 2000 degrees farenhieght that this one is capable of but for the price I say it is excellent.

False advertising
Unit is advertized as a high temp Thermotometer having the ability to measure up to 2300 degrese it says so in ad ON package it says 1800 but it is shipped with a K type probe only rated at 450 degrese No where in ad or on package does it disclose this . further no where does it say this UNTILL you open up and READ the instructions! AND it dose not say where you can GET the correct high temp probe.Verry dissasfited

Schaler Beigeschmack

Impeccable.
