My experience
Update: I've come to realize this stuff is basically permanent. Over six weeks later, the color turned into a still bright but slightly muted version of the same bright purple. Perfectly within my range of acceptable. By this time it was time to bleach and re-dye it because my dark roots were showing. Seriously, this stuff is great. SHORT VERSION: Three days has been enough to convince me that this is the best stuff out there. I have had purple hair for a very long time, and I am a very active person, and yet even when it's fresh, this stuff does not run under extreme conditions, whereas every other dye brand I have tried does - even this unsealed vs. other brands sealed. Based on this early experience I expect it to last for a very longtime in comparison to others. If you want a vivid, unnatural hair color, long-term, don't play around with the consumer brands. This is what professionals use, and for very good reason. It stays in hair, yet comes out of most everything else (I would avoid getting it on fabric though!) fairly easily. However, seeing how well it's sticking to my hair, I doubt I could recommend it for short term use. The directions say it can be bleached out and dyed over to a medium to dark color, but I don't intend to try. I like my purple. LONG VERSION: So, I've had purple hair for a very long time (I even sometimes jokingly claim that it's natural). I've used very nearly every brand I've been able to find. I am also a very active person, and usually have a problem with dye bleeding when I sweat, so I figured trying out a professional brand might be wise - if it holds up to rock stars, it might work for me, right? So I bought it, it arrived in a timely fashion, and this has been my experience: Day 1: Applied the dye. The first thing I noticed about it is that it's a nice royal purple, not reddish like other dyes I've tried - a good thing in my book; this is exactly the color I'm always aiming for. It's applied with a bowl and brush, which I usually use anyway as it's much neater than most applicator bottles. It went on easy, and gets good coverage; my hair is short and about 1/3 of the tube was enough for my whole head. I probably even used more than I needed just out of habit, actually. The instructions say to leave it in for no more than 20 minutes or it may actually make it fade faster. I was skeptical of this, but followed the instructions to the best of my ability anyway (it took several minutes to "paint" all my hair so I couldn't be very precise); I will let you know just how well it works. After the 20 minutes were up, I stepped in the shower to rinse it off, and that's where this gets exciting. There is a reason this stuff says it's for professional use only, and it's not that it can be dangerous if used improperly - it's for the mess it can make without professional equipment to contain it! The first thing I noticed was that the water was much brighter than I expected for the amount of dye I used (which led to my suspicion that I may have used more than I really needed). The second thing I noticed was that the water dyed my skin. The third thing I noticed was that after about 0.5 seconds of contact with the dye-water, my entire shower was covered in purple streaks. Everything was purple. Everything. My entire body, my shower, everything that came into contact with the diluted form of this dye for just a matter of seconds. Though it came off easily enough with about half an hour of washing and scrubbing (incidentally, my bathroom looks cleaner now than it has in years, not sure if it's just from the intensity of the scrubbing or if I left some dye behind and the blue tone is canceling out the yellow stains that have set in over the years), the next time I use this I fully intend to rinse my hair out in the sink...and line it with plastic first. I strongly recommend having plenty of soap, toothpaste, bleach, and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers or knockoffs thereof on hand. Still, if this is what happened after half a second of contact with the diluted dye, I have high hopes for how well it will stay in my hair after 20 minutes of contact with the concentrated stuff! Now rinsed and dry, after having been applied to my hair , which was pink due to residual dye from the last time I colored it, it's still a fantastic royal purple, exactly my favorite shade. So far, everything's looking good! Day 2: Washed hair at night; water was clear, though a good amount of pigment came out with shampoo. Made no apparent difference in hair's overall color, though noticing a fantastic iridescence on just-conditioned hair that hasn't appeared with other dye brands. Tomorrow is my first day of training since dyeing my hair; this is the real test... Day 3: It is perhaps time to explain the kind of training I do on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I take a body conditioning class through my college, which is taught by a remarkable woman who coaches professional athletes as well as amateurs. My heart rate usually reaches 95% of my maximum safe heart rate, and I leave sweating so much that I look more like I've been swimming than running and lifting weights. The dye did not run. Every other brand of dye I have every used runs after this kind of training, at the very least for the first week. This stuff? Stayed in place; the closest it came to running was a small amount rubbing off on my forehead from my fringe (easily cleaned up with soap and water) - and I didn't even get a chance to seal it like I have with other brands! I believe this is enough evidence for me to deliver my semi-final verdict. I am fully convinced that this stuff is the best out there.

Holy Grail
As someone who will no longer touch their hair with bleach or permanent hair dye, I had to find a semi permanent dye that still gave me some depth of color I wanted and lasted more than a few weeks. Pravana is it. Almost all semi permanent hair dyes (especially ones that show up on darker hair) are going to stain and be hard to work with. Iโve been using them for almost 8 years now and have it pretty much down to a science. I used to have to dye on a Friday because Iโd have stains on my head, neck, ears, hands etc and couldnโt go to work the day after. I now can dye the night before and go to work the next day. I got a lot of these tips from other Amazon reviews years back and some were my own discoveries. Nonetheless Iโm passing them to you. If you do not want to stain yourself or your bathroom, try the followingโฆ - Cover your sink and counter top with a trash bag or old towel. No matter how careful you are, a drip is probably going to get on it. - Same with the floor. Put something under you. - Put Vaseline or aquaphor (a lot of it) all around your neck, forehead, temples, ears, arms (unless you wear long sleeves) sides of your cheeks.. everywhere color could touch (it will touch your skin no matter how careful you are). - get a cheap hair dressers cover. I wrap mine so the open sides wrap towards the front of me and the closed section is in the back. Pull it up to your back hairline and fasten as best you can. If it slips down, the vaseline gives you protection. - Wear gloves when you apply the dye, rinse the dye and the first and sometimes second time you wash with shampoo. Same with when you brush it after the first rinse or two. Itโs going to bleed and will stain when the dye is still really potent in your hair so wearing gloves until itโs dry will prevent staining. - Use a color applying brush. It doesnโt matter too much on which end you start with since thereโs no developer. I find starting at the top gets less dye on my arms. If you get dye on your skin, you can remove with old rag or paper towel at the end. I get all the color on and then wipe everything off with an old rag or paper towel. Thereโs usually no staining since I used Vaseline but if thereโs any left, soap and water in the shower will take the rest off. I usually have no staining when I get out after the first rinse. - I usually leave the color in overnight since my hair is so dark. You do not need to do this. It has never harmed my hair (I think it feels amazing after) and I personally feel I get better color this way. I wrap my hair in a Walmart bag and make sure itโs covering my neck and tie the two handles towards the front of my head. Sometimes I double bag. Never had stains on my pillow when I woke up. - If you have a clogged or slow draining tub, you will have massive staining first couple of rinses. Even if you donโt you will probably have some staining. If any color gets on the walls as you are rinsing, immediately take a cup of water and rinse it. It may or may not get it all off or you may see a hue of color depending on how much dye was there. I have a trick for any color left. - Immediately after getting out of the shower, wrap your hair in an old towel. It will stain the towel and any drops can stain your floor. Get all the water out you can so your hair isnโt dripping. - spray your tub the second you can! I use the Clorox bathroom cleaner with bleach. It comes right off. Regular bleach in water will get it off too if you fill up your tub and let it sit. But I found the spray is much easier. Spray and rinse or spray and wipe. Both work for me. You can never tell the tub was purple or blue afterwards. Also works if you get it on tile or sink. Careful though because sometimes a blob of the dye has gotten directly on my sink and even with bleach it still had some discoloration. Thatโs why I cover my entire counter now. - Also watch out for doors and walls! You may think you are father away than you are and brush up against it. Same when applying the color. Careful not to get drips on the wall or front of your sink. A magic eraser has worked for walls for me before but sometimes nothing got the color out depending on the wood. I know I seems like a lot but itโs worth it to have colored hair without the damage. My hair is so long now and finally doesnโt feel like straw. Pravana gives me the best color on non bleached darker hair and it lasts a good 2 months for me. All those steps above ensure I am NOT staining my skin and needing to scrub it off before work and that my bathroom stays dye free.

Best Color Out There
*updated September 2017 I began using bright colors in my hair when I was twelve, and in the last twenty two years I have tried just about every brand there is. Pravana is by far the most long lasting color option out there. (I do use Joico, Arctic Fox, and Sparks sometimes, but they don't stay in my hair as long). Ion colors are not worth using, and are by far the worst I have tried. If you want excellent results, use excellent products. Morrocanoil is a favorite of mine to rehydrate hair after bleaching, as is Olaplex 1, and 2. My favorite shampoos are Oribe, Kerastase, and Caviar. I use Batiste dry shampoo (it doesn't strip much color, is low priced, and works so well that I only wash my hair once a week). I have my routine and products down solid, and as a result am able to strip my hair again and again, but it still remains shiny and healthy looking. I usually only touch up colors once a month, and this is only to rehydrate and add shine, not because the colors have faded. Pastels are higher maintenance, and I touch them up every week/ every other week depending on shade. Dark colors don't require your hair to be lightened to a nine or ten, but I prefer to have my hair pre lightened to the color of the inside of a banana peel anyway. Platinum hair as a foundation equals beautiful fade when your colors do start to go. Instead of having ugly brassy colors, you will have nice looking pastels. I slather my hair in coconut oil the night before bleaching (I like Schwartzkopf developer and use forty), and apply bleach directly onto oiled hair the next day. I don't find that adding Olaplex 1 to developer does much. However, after rinsing out the bleach in cold water, I apply Olaplex 1 (don't shampoo the bleach out, just rinse). I squeeze out excess water and Olaplex mix, and then work Olaplex 2 in as well. This is left in overnight. In the morning I dampen my hair and work Morrocanoil into it. It seems like a lot of product, but through trial and error I've found a great way to keep my super processed hair strong and awesome. I leave all this in for at least a few hours or overnight again. (I wear hats and put my hair up to leave the house during this process- no shame in my game). I rinse and wash in cold over the sink, and don't bother using conditioner since I will either be bleaching again or adding in Pravana. I have to strip my color twice as my hair is dark, a level 3, so this whole process gets repeated again. Dilute Pravana colors with regular conditioner to make your own shades and pastels. Don't shampoo after the rinse, just rinse with cold water to minimize color bleeding. Leave hair unwashed for about a week to keep your color longer. Pravana' green isn't green. It is teal. If you want green you can mix your own shades using yellow (regular or neon depending on how bright you want to go) for your base and adding tiny amounts of blue. Arctic Fox has some nice shades of green, but they don't stay in my hair as long. Pravan's silver makes an awesome toner that lasts indefinitely if you want an ash blonde look, but you have to cut it with conditioner a bit over half the total mix. (The super blonde pic I added I used the silver as toner mixed one part Pravana and two and a half parts conditioner) Happy coloring! I'm happy to answer questions as well if you have any.

Great lasting color if you're willing to pay the price of the clean up.
This product has become my go-to for purple hair color. I've played with many different products to get the color that this one provides. On my hair (I have medium-dark brown hair and did not bleach it beforehand) the purple showed up beautifully; indoors, it was dark enough to not have a "look at me" vibe, and the color really came alive in the sunlight. It was perfect to give me the purple I wanted without it being attention grabbing to the whole room. The color aspect of this product, I'd give a 5/5. I had watched YouTube tutorials before applying this particular product to my hair, as well as read many reviews. EVERYONE had reviewed it as messy. I, however, had a thought that it would all turn out perfect for me. I was wrong. There was purple EVERYWHERE. My entire shower was a tint of purple for about 3 days, even after scrubbing it multiple times with various bath cleaners. My hands were purple for a couple days. The main thing that was hard to get off was the color on my finger and toenails (it had gotten on my toenails from the shower). It took over a week to get it off of my nails. Also, I turned my Otterbox on my phone a certain tint of purple as well from just having my hands stained with it. For application process I'd give this product a 1/5 stars. After the application process was a little tricky. I thought that it would've been like any typical hair color, when you get out of the shower, just dry as normal and go on about life. I was wrong here again. My hair stained many towels and shirts, as well as a pillowcase, for about 3-5 days. There was also an instance when I was showering at a friend's house and obviously didn't have my shampoo for this haircolor. She had the coconut water Organix shampoo and conditioner. Being as that it was free from dyes and unnecessary chemicals, I thought that it would be fine. The second the shampoo hit my hair I saw purple streaming down my body from my hair. When I got out of the shower, all of the purple from that area of my head had been completely stripped. When I was using the correct shampoo and conditioner for this product, the color sustained well for about 2 1/2 weeks, and began to decrease in vibrancy after that. In total, the color lasted about a month. After application process, 2/5. Color sustaining over time, 4/5. Overview: -Color: 5/5 -Application process: 1/5 -After application process: 2/5 -Color sustaining over time: 4/5 Pros: -perfect color -sustained color about a month -easy to apply Cons: -very messy to apply and clean up -need proper shampoo and conditioner

Not for the faint-at-heart! Beautiful bold color
Holy moly! This is the holy Grail of superbright and saturating hair colors. I can't even believe how deep and vibrant this color is. This is not for the faint of heart or for newbies. This is intense and can make a huge permanent mess if you aren't careful ( just check out the photo of my tub after I rinsed the color out) I have used pravana hair dye before to go bright red. I wanted to do something a little brighter and more intense this time, and so I chose the violet color. It actually turned out darker than the color swatch that is shown in the product photo, but I'm sure the color will fade over time into a beautiful violet purple. My hair had also been previously bleached and colored, so it's possible that because I was starting with a darker hair strand, the color is darker and general on my hair. Something that is very important to note is to read the directions that are on Amazon or that other reviewers have posted before you start. When I was doing the red dye, most people said to leave it on his long as possible. However, for the violet die, the users do not recommend leaving it on for more than 20 or 30 minutes as it can actually make the hair color fade faster. I'm not sure if this is true, but after 40 minutes, I ran to the bathroom to rinse it out because I was worried about overdoing it. The most important thing for you to know is that this makes a huge mess if you're not careful. If this is your first time dying your hair and you really want to do it yourself at home, I highly recommend doing it outside or covering your entire dye area with plastic. It made a huge mess on my deck and dyed a couple of my fabric chairs purple when my friend dripped color on them. (She was rushing and used way more product than needed, so it made a huge dripping mess. Take your time and start out with less color, adding more as needed, rather than using a ton at once, and making a mess). I was able to get them out with soap and water but you must do this immediately if you want to have any chance of getting the stain out of anything. I posted a picture of my tub after I rinsed the color out. It's also good to know and that everything on my body was dark purple. It took me several sessions of exfoliating and scrubbing to get the color out. Just be prepared for your shoulders and back and hands to be slightly purple that first day. It also died my feet purple in the shower from the dye running down my body. It's not a super big deal, and two days later it is already faded and you can't tell on my body, but something to know if you were doing it before an event. I almost recommend just taking this color to a salon and having them do it there to spare yourself the trouble of the mess at home. I did have my ends professionally bleached several months ago. I don't ever recommend doing the bleaching yourself at home but that is totally up to you. I don't know your level of hair expertise and so if you feel confident bleaching your hair at home, who am I to stop you? Anyway, I put my hair in a pony tail and so I just had my friend up tie-dye to the part below the ponytail that was previously bleached professionally. oh, I also would recommend investing in purple or very dark colored towels for you to use when dying, rinsing, and for the next several weeks after you apply the haircolor. I have been pleasantly surprised with how little the color has transferred on other items considering how terrible the bleeding and dyeing was on the first night. It did transfer onto the crystal clear white gym towels that they provide at my gym, but I didn't notice anything on my towels from hot yoga where I sweat a lot. That being said, I invested in a couple of blue and purple darker colored yoga towels and would highly recommend you do the same if you are planning on working out with this bright hair color. I'm hoping that as time goes on, The color will stick more and more and I won't have to worry about transfer at all. For now, I plan on wearing a darker colored shirts and not having my hair wet resting against any fabrics in my house or on my clothes. I did post a picture of my bathtub so that you can see the intensity that I am talking about. That is why they call these colors vivid. Regardless, I've gotten tons of compliments and I absolutely love it. It's a super bright and vibrant purple but I'm looking forward to lighting a little bit overtime and being the beautiful purple that is in the stock photo. I did add a third photo of the tub after I spent hours using comments, magic eraser, and a scrub brush. So, it is possible to get the colors out of your tub, but I wish I could have avoided this in the first place by just rinsing my hair outside or next time, I will just take this color to a salon.

Beautiful vivid, long lasting, different hair color :)
This stuff is freaking awesome! I purchased this Pravana Vivids in Violet after doing a lot of research about "fantasy" color hair dye. My lifelong dream has always been to have a full head of blue or purple hair, but I never tried getting my hair dyed on any color different than black. Mostly because all the fantasy color hair dyes I knew about were semi-permanent, and would wash out in a couple days/weeks. About 2 years ago I decided I wanted to go blonde, so I started my journey of bleaching blackest black dyed hair into blonde. It took me several shades of orange, many months of treatment after damaging my hair A LOT. But after a year or so I finally achieved a blonde level 10. Then I started to look once again for vivid color hair dye and came across Pravana. When I saw these were available here on Amazon for anyone to purchase, I was thrilled. So I went ahead and purchased it. To apply it, I used almost a bottle of my favorite conditioner and mixed most of one tube of dye. The final color was a very deep rich purple/violet with some blueish undertones, it is rather dark, but I like it this way, because it will not fade as quick. Now, it is true that this dye stains a lot and everything it touches, but that also means it stays on longer. I was looking for the longest exposure time, mostly because I also wanted to deep condition my hair, which is why I used my favorite conditioner. My husband helped me do the whole application, (as he always does with all the hair dyes I want to put on) and it worked fantastically. I wrapped my head in plastic wrap and left it on for about 2 hours. When I washed it out on the kitchen zinc, almost no color came out at all. No stains on the zinc, only a few stains on the towel I used to cover myself when my husband was applying the dye. After this, I noticed my hair was so incredibly soft and smelled very nice. I went ahead and blow dried and then flat ironed my hair, I have to do this every time, because my hair is curly, thick and needs some taming. The final result exceeded my expectations, and I had very high expectations to begin with, so you can imagine how happy I was. This is the second wash after applying the dye, and it bled a lot (compared to almost no bleeding after the application), but it still looks as great and vivid as it did the first time. I highly recommend this product to anyone looking to get a beautiful vivid, long lasting, different hair color.

Violet!
INITIAL DYE So far I'm in love! I used to use manic panic amplified, but got frustrated when it would only be bright for about 2 washes, and completely gone within 4-5 washes. I used the violet on my virgin dirty blonde hair, left it on for about an hour. I rinsed in my kitchen sink with very cold water (stainless sink that can't be stained) and there was a lot of color run off, but I expected this based on other reviews, and also because it is such a pigmented color (and to be honest I squirted out too much dye and just slathered it on very thick to use it all up). I rinsed until the water ran pretty clear. I immediately blow dried my hair to cut down on accidentally bleeding on things, and I used an old dark navy towel to dry off with that I don't care about staining. After I was done blow-drying, I was ECSTATIC. The color is so bright it almost glows. It's brilliant. I only dyed the front sections of my hair (see photos). The only bleeding problems I had were day 1 - had a bit of purple on my neck, came right off with a baby wipe, and 2 - woke up one with with very slight purple tint on the side of my face where I must have laid on my purple hair while sleeping. Came off very easily. I did put an old black t-shirt over my pillowcase, though, just in case. And shower caps while showering (but not washing hair). FIRST WASH Did the initial dye on Sat AM. Washed my hair last night, Tuesday night. I used my normal trader joe's nourishing shampoo (sulfate and paraden free... contemplated buying a special shampoo for colored hair but decided against it for cost/ laziness reasons), along with OGX macadamia oil conditioner. I did switch my conditioner because I read a tip that the wheat proteins in the volumizing shampoos can break down color faster, so I switched from the OGX volumizing conditioner to the macadamia. I took a hot shower, but switched to cold water when rinsing, shampooing and conditioning hair. The shampooing did create a lot of color run off, but none stained my white shower. After the shampoo rinse, the color run off subsided... Not sure if there was any during the conditioner rinse off. I wasn't paying that much attention but I didn't notice it either. Towel dried with the navy towel and blow dried immediately to avoid bleeding onto clothes, skin, bed, etc. It was really hard to tell if the color stayed bright since I washed at night. I'm a dork and made my husband shine a flashlight on my head to get a better look and it still seemed bright but not totally electric like immediately after dying. This morning I took a photo to compare (attached, the one with the strand in the middle of the face). It seems about 80-90% as bright. If it stays this vivid for a few more washes I will be more than happy after my experiences with manic panic. I will update as I wash my hair more! SECOND WASH I bought AG colour savor shampoo and tresemme color conditioner and did the second wash last night. It did still run a but while shampooing, but none during conditioner. The color seems slightly lighter, but it's so hard to tell inside! It's still clearly purple, just less vibrant/ blue-ish. Please excuse my crude paintbrush editing to preserve my privacy.

I wanted to LOVE the Pravana Vivids but just can't
*Update 1 month later* I had to give this color at least 3 stars. While it does rub off even when dry (read full review for my whine about that) the staying power of this color is purely amazing! I have tried to get this stuff out of my hair for over a MONTH! I used Dawn dish soap a few times and nothing. I've washed my hair at least 30-40 times and it is still a bright vibrant purple. I literally had to dye this color out of my hair. As a long time lover of red hair I didn't think this was even possible. Grand total I have had this color on my hair close to 6 weeks and it is just as purple as the day I put it on! The bleeding has finally stopped too (wet or dry). I hate to give Pravana only three stars, but having not been informed that it literally rubs off (again see full review) dry I just can't give this amazing product full stars. THE GOOD: I wanted to LOVE the Pravana Vivids but just can't. I ordered the violet color and used it to do about 7 inch tips on the ends of my long hair. I've used fantasy colors before as well as been every shade of red possible. Using both permanent and not to achieve all that. The color came out amazing! It was a very pronounced purple even with dark hair and in the sun it literally just shined. My hair felt very healthy thanks to not using developer. I also understand that when using fantasy colors, washing it out you are going to get color everywhere. As well as you turning a bright shade of purple during the process. That's normal. Staining of the skin is normal with any color too...especially if you are sloppy as I can be sometimes. THE PROBLEM: The color comes off on EVERYTHING even days after being washed!! I didn't noticed this right away. About day 3 since washing my hair someone commented that my neck was purple. I had no water near my hair for 3 days. I was not sweating nor was it even hot out for my skin to be moist. So I just shrugged it off, but now was aware of the issue. After a brief search I found forums where very few posts mentioned the same problem. Washed my hair again (color was staying in fantastically though!) because I figured maybe it was color residue. Same thing was happening. 4 days later (I don't wash it daily) washed my hair again and used a hair dryer to dry it (that morning). Next day I was running my hands through the ends of my hair mindlessly. When I looked down at my hands they were the same color as if I'd just dyed my hair and rinsed it! I understand my hands are hot from body heat, but I have never used a color semi or even the most temporary stuff, that has literally stained anything it touches. Yesterday I made a point to keep my hair off my skin and clothes and the brief times it touched my neck it stained it. No matter what I did I was turning into a purple minion from Despicable Me! I understand that I could have put a clear glaze on top to try and lock the color in more. I also understand that the color obviously wasn't sticking to my hair. But I can get other products out there, where these extra steps would not be required (although they would fade quicker). I had to be so conscious of what my hair touches even when dry it's almost as bad as using chalk in your hair. THE PLUS SIDE: This color will just NOT WASH OUT!!! Quite an ironic bonus really. So if you want a fantastic color that is very high maintenance on a whole other level this is the one for you! If you want to be done with the dye once your hair is dry, and only deal with bleeding when wet....this is not the color for you.

Soooo gorgeous
This colour is gorgeous and the product is easy to use. I just mixed it with regular white hair conditioner and applied to my clean dry hair. Left it for 1 hour and TA DA!! The colour is EXACTLY what I was looking for! The front of my hair was blond which turned pink. I already had blue in my hair so it made it purple which is what I wanted to achieve. I've ordered another tube of the magenta and I also ordered the Violet. And the best part: it did not colour my bathtub whatsoever! Looooove this product!!!

Excellent. As described.
Itโs actually VIOLET not silver! So if you have light blonde hair it will have a deep violet finish. Color lasts extremely well. Hair is very silky after use. However be aware that it stains and very difficult to clean. Other than that itโs great, salon quality.
