I have a old ZOTAC in my old HP, but for this motherboard, you're better off getting the best quality you can.

I am using an i5-4570 and doing this right now. You can actually hook up 3 monitors (using the HDMI port for the 3rd) at once.

Q: how many fans does this support?

it supports 1 Auxiliary fan...3 in total. 1 is for exhaust fan, 1 is for CPU ONLY, and 1 extra for any other fan. Just buy a power supply with molex connectors and an external fan controller. some cases like the corsair 600T have a built-in fan controller on top of the case to which i have 4 fans hooked up to and controlled by. the MOBO only runs the heatsink fan and the exhaust.

Q: How do I power on the motherboard without a case?

At one edge of the motherboard, at the side near the coin battery (silvery disk about the size of a quarter), are several sets of jumper header pins. Look for the dual row set labeled "JFP1." "FP" stands for "Front Panel," referring to the devices located on the front of the PC case, including the buttons for power and reset and the LEDs for power and disk activity. JFP1 is documented on page 22 of the motherboard manual which can be downloaded from here: http://us.msi.com/support/mb/H81M-P33.html#down-manualJFP1 has 2 rows, one with 5 pins, the other with 4 pins (plus a blank spot). In the row of 4 pins are 2 pins located next to the blank spot. They normally connect to the power button, but you can turn on the motherboard by momentarily shorting those 2 pins together with a screwdriver, pencil tip, or ball point pen tip. To turn off the motherboard, short those pins together again, but you may have to short them for 4 seconds before the motherboard turns off.
