Owl City is an American electronica project created in 2007 in Owatonna, Minnesota; it is one of several projects by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Adam Young. Young created the project while experimenting with music in his parents' basement. Owl City developed a following on the social networking site MySpace, like many musicians who achieved success in the late 2000s, before signing with Universal Republic Records in 2008. The project's 2009 album Ocean Eyes charted on the US Billboard 200, reaching No. 8 on the strength of the hit single "Fireflies", which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified Platinum in the United States in April 2010. Owl City's 2011 album, All Things Bright and Beautiful, reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the US Top Rock Albums chart. The lead single, "Good Time", peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Owl City's sound has been described as synth-pop and electronica; his lyrics have been compared to those of Sufjan Stevens. Owl City has found success with his synth-based arrangements and hooks, often involving catchy melodies with heavy use of auto-tune vocals. Young also uses a laptop to generate additional percussion and sound effects during live performances.
