Founded in Toronto in 2010, Badbadnotgood is a Canadian instrumental hip-hop group composed of Matthew Tavares on keys, Chester Hansen on bass, and Alexander Sowinski on drums. The group met while attending Humber College's music program. They have released four albums, the most recent being III (2016), and have collaborated with a number of high-profile artists, including Tyler, the Creator, Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, and Ghostface Killah. Badbadnotgood's music is characterized by its jazz influence and experimental approach to hip-hop. Their debut album, BBNG (2011), was entirely self-produced and featured the trio playing over samples from Madlib, J Dilla, and MF DOOM. The album was well-received by critics and led to the group being named "the best new band in jazz" by Spin magazine. III, Badbadnotgood's most recent album, features a more electronic sound than its predecessors. The album was produced by Frank Dukes and Kaytranada, and includes guest appearances from Samuel T. Herring (of Future Islands), Leland Whitty (of BADBADNOTGOOD), and Charlotte Day Wilson. III was nominated for the 2016 Polaris Music Prize. Badbadnotgood's discography is available on CD and vinyl.
